When Her $14 Million Syndicate Business Partner Throws Her Beloved Rescue Cat Into a Frozen Estate Pool, a 68-Year-Old Mafia Bookkeeper's Shattered Antique Vase Exposes a Hidden Murder Video and Se...
The cold bit into my skin the moment I hit the water, a shock that stole my breath. It was like plunging into a thousand needles.
My joints seized. The ice shards scraped my exposed arms.
Evelyn’s laugh, sharp and brittle, echoed from the pool deck. “What a spectacle, Nora! Hope you enjoy your little dip!”
Barnaby thrashed in front of me, his one ear slicked flat against his head. His tiny claws scrabbled at the thinning ice.
I pushed through the slush, the freezing water numbing my muscles. My teeth chattered, a relentless rhythm in my skull.
I reached him, scooping his shivering body into my arms. He was a small, cold bundle, his fur soaked and heavy.
With Barnaby tucked against my chest, I fought my way back to the edge. The stone was slick, impossible to grip.
My fingers ached, turning blue. My chest burned.
I pushed against the stone, my soaked clothes dragging me down, until I finally hauled myself out, gasping. Water streamed from my dress, forming puddles on the deck.
Barnaby squirmed, scrambling from my arms the moment his paws hit solid ground. He was a blur of shivering fur, darting for the safety of the house.
He shot through the open sliding door Evelyn had left ajar.
“Barnaby, wait!” I called, but my voice was weak, hoarse from the cold.
I stumbled after him, my legs stiff. The warm air of the library hit me like a physical force, but I was still shaking.
Barnaby, disoriented and panicked, launched himself across the polished floor. He collided with the pedestal holding Evelyn’s prized Ming Dynasty vase.
The vase wobbled. A terrible, drawn-out crack split the air.
It toppled, hitting the marble floor with a sound that echoed like a gunshot. Shards of priceless porcelain scattered everywhere.
Evelyn, who had just stepped inside, froze. Her face twisted into a mask of pure fury.
“My vase!” she shrieked, her eyes wide with disbelief. “That was a quarter-million dollars, you old hag!”
She didn’t even look at me, drenched and shivering, or at Barnaby, cowering under a heavy armchair.
My gaze, however, was drawn to the shattered base of the vase. Amidst the delicate blue and white fragments, something hard and dark lay exposed.
It was a small, black USB drive, sealed neatly within a hidden compartment no one would have ever known was there.
