Chapter 12: The Following Month

The air in the penthouse suite hung heavy, thick with the metallic scent of chlorine from the icy pool and a faint, acrid chemical tang. Eleanor Kensington stood frozen, her Hermès bag shredded, vials of clear liquid scattered across the polished marble floor. Her face was a mask of disbelief.

I moved before she could react, my heart still thrumming with the exertion of rescuing her cat.

I knelt, ignoring the stinging scrapes on my arms. My fingers closed around one of the small glass vials. It was cold, smooth. The liquid inside shimmered, almost invisible.

“What is this, Eleanor?” I asked, my voice flat.

Her eyes snapped to me, then to David, who was just entering the suite, his brow furrowed with mild annoyance rather than alarm. He’d clearly heard some of the commotion, but not enough to understand the gravity.

“Maya, what in God’s name is happening?” David asked, his gaze flitting from the soaked cat to his mother’s ruined bag. “Mother, your Hermès!”

Eleanor’s lips tightened, a predatory glint entering her eyes. She wasn’t panicking about the toxin, only about the optics.

“She’s lost her mind, David,” Eleanor said, her voice sharp, cutting through the silence. “Look at her. Attacking poor Alistair, then destroying my property.” She gestured vaguely at the scattered vials with a dismissive wave, as if they were mere trinkets.

I held up the vial. “This isn’t property damage, Eleanor. This is evidence.”

Eleanor scoffed, a dry, humorless sound. “Evidence of your instability, perhaps. You’re agitated, Maya. You’ve been complaining of… palpitations. Exhaustion.” She smiled, a cold, calculated expression. “Perhaps the stress of Chief Surgeon is too much for you.”

David shifted uncomfortably, his eyes darting between us. He opened his mouth, then closed it. His usual pattern.

“I’m demanding an immediate toxicology screen on this substance,” I stated, my voice unwavering. “Right now.”

“You demand nothing,” Eleanor countered, her voice rising. “This is a private suite. You are my daughter-in-law, not an officer of the law.”

She pulled out her phone, her movements sharp and deliberate. She didn’t call security. She didn’t call her lawyer.

“Harrison, David’s uncle, our board trustee, is on his way,” Eleanor announced, her thumb flying across the screen. “And Robert. And Susan. A quick emergency meeting, I think. To address your… erratic behavior, Maya. And your sudden, very convenient, desire to seize control of the Kensington family’s medical trust.”

A chill went down my spine, unrelated to the pool water still clinging to my skin. This was her move. Not to deny the poison, but to preemptively discredit me.

“She’ll claim I fabricated this entire scene,” I realized aloud.

Eleanor’s smile widened, devoid of warmth. “Why, Maya. What a terrible accusation. Unless, of course, it were true.”

David finally found his voice, a weak protest. “Mother, that’s a bit extreme—”

“Extreme?” Eleanor cut him off, her gaze like ice. “Or merely protecting our family’s legacy from a reckless individual who clearly has something to hide?”

She didn’t wait for an answer. Her eyes, full of a chilling resolve, were already focused on the door, preparing for the arrival of her loyal board members. The trap was set.
