Chapter 12: The Following Month

The boardroom devolved into controlled chaos. Phones continued to ring, whispers escalating into hushed arguments. Trustees, once loyal to Eleanor, now looked at her with a mix of betrayal and fear, their own portfolios threatened by the collapsing financial dominoes. David, pale and trembling, finally stirred.

“Mother,” he whispered, a hand reaching for her arm, “what have you done?”

Eleanor merely swatted his hand away, her eyes fixed on Arthur, a raw, venomous hatred burning there. She hadn’t expected this. Not the speed, not the scale.

I rose from my seat. “This institution cannot be held hostage by one individual’s vindictiveness.” My voice, though calm, cut through the noise. “I move that the St. Jude Kensington Foundation be placed into immediate emergency corporate receivership.”

Harrison, still reeling, could only offer a weak protest. “Maya, that’s… that’s an extreme measure. It will mean a complete financial restructuring. It will strip Eleanor of all control.”

“Precisely,” I stated. “And it will protect the hospital, its staff, and its patients from the consequences of a direct criminal act.”

The motion passed with a swift, decisive vote. The board, panicked by the mass donor exodus, moved to protect what remained. Eleanor was frozen, a queen watching her castle turn to dust.

Over the next few days, the financial consequences cascaded. Receivership meant immediate external oversight. Legal teams swarmed Eleanor’s offices, attaching liens to her meticulously compiled list of assets: luxury penthouses, offshore investment portfolios, even the ancestral Kensington estate. The name that had commanded so much power was now associated with toxic scandal and financial ruin.

Arthur, though instrumental in Eleanor’s downfall, seemed restless. He buried himself in the hospital’s archives, poring over old ledgers, personnel files, anything related to the foundation’s murky past. He told me he was looking for any other financial irregularities, any other hidden schemes Eleanor might have orchestrated.

One afternoon, I found him in his office, a dusty box open on his desk. He held up a faded folder, its edges brittle.

“Maya,” he said, his voice tight. “I found something. From your initial application to St. Jude.”

My breath caught in my throat. My past. My carefully constructed past.

He pulled out a series of documents, not my official St. Jude file, but something older. He laid them out: a grainy ID badge, handwritten notes from a community outreach program, and what looked like a rough, unofficial transcript from an East Baltimore free clinic. The name on the ID wasn’t Kensington. It was Lin. Maya Lin.

“These are records from an unlicensed street paramedic service,” Arthur said, his gaze fixed on me. “Operating out of East Baltimore, a decade ago. Before you were Dr. Kensington.”

He tapped a finger on one of the handwritten reports. “Your name is on dozens of these. Administering emergency care, making quick, on-the-spot diagnoses, handling complex medical situations with limited resources.”

He looked up at me, his face a mixture of confusion and dawning suspicion. “And here. Detailed notes on various compounds. Including cardiac glycosides. Their effects. Their dosage. How they might be… manipulated.”

His eyes widened, reflecting the dim light from the overhead lamp. He looked from the old files to me, then back to the vial still sitting on his desk.

“You knew, didn’t you?” he whispered, his voice barely audible. “You knew what Eleanor was doing. You understood the poison.”

The air crackled between us. The truth, meticulously buried for years, was now laid bare.
