Chapter 12: The Following Month

The hospital board room buzzed with a manufactured tension. Eleanor, composed and elegant despite her ruined bag, sat at the head of the polished mahogany table, flanked by David and her brother, Harrison Kensington, whose face was a carefully neutral mask. I clutched the evidence vial, tucked securely in a biohazard bag, under the table.

Eleanor had painted a vivid picture of my “distress,” framing my rescue of Alistair as an act of aggression, and the vials as my clumsy attempt to frame her. Harrison nodded along, occasionally interjecting with feigned concern.

“Dr. Kensington’s recent cardiac irregularities,” Harrison began, his voice smooth and paternal, “coupled with this alleged incident, raise serious questions about her judgment. And her ability to lead St. Jude’s surgical department.”

David wouldn’t meet my gaze. He was a statue, carved from guilt and fear of his mother’s financial wrath.

I knew I couldn’t fight them on their terms. This wasn’t about truth; it was about power. My only hope was to introduce an element they couldn’t control.

“I need to speak to someone,” I stated, pushing back my chair. “Someone who understands both medicine and this family.”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed. “Everyone here understands medicine, Maya. And this family.”

“No,” I said, meeting her stare. “Not everyone.”

I walked directly to the office of Dr. Arthur Croft, Eleanor’s ex-husband, the man who had co-founded St. Jude Metropolitan Hospital with the Kensington family decades ago, only to be systematically pushed out. His office, unlike the sleek, modern board room, was cluttered with old books and a faint scent of antiseptic and aged paper.

Arthur sat hunched over a microscope, his silver hair a halo in the lamplight. He looked up, his eyes tired but sharp.

“Maya. I heard there was… a commotion. Eleanor sounded quite agitated.” He paused, taking in my disheveled appearance. “You look like you’ve been in a fight.”

“I have,” I said, placing the biohazard bag on his desk. “I need you to look at this.”

He picked it up, his brow furrowing as he examined the vial. His fingers, calloused from years of surgery, turned it carefully.

“Where did you get this?” he asked, his voice low.

I recounted the incident in the penthouse, omitting none of Eleanor’s calculated cruelty. As I spoke, Arthur’s expression shifted from professional curiosity to grim recognition.

He walked over to a secure cabinet, pulling out a small, almost antique reference book. He flipped through pages, then held the vial up to the light again, comparing it to an illustration.

“Synthetic cardiac glycoside,” he murmured, his voice barely audible. “Concentrated. A micro-dose would cause arrhythmia, fatigue. A larger dose… fatal cardiac arrest.” He looked at me, his gaze piercing. “This is what you’ve been experiencing, isn’t it?”

I nodded, my throat tight.

He put the vial down, his hands trembling slightly. “Eleanor,” he breathed, the name a bitter taste on his tongue. He walked to the window, staring out at the city skyline, then turned back to me.

“She did this to me, you know,” he said, his voice raw. “Decades ago. Not poison, not directly. But constant undermining. Fabricated concerns about my ‘temperament.’ Drip by drip, she eroded my standing, my reputation. Until the board, under her influence, voted me out of my own foundation.”

He ran a hand through his hair. “She wanted sole control. Always has. The hospital, the foundation. She sees it as her birthright, her personal empire.”

“So this isn’t just about my position,” I said, the pieces clicking into place. “It’s about the entire trust.”

“It always is,” Arthur agreed, a deep sadness in his eyes. He picked up the vial again, his expression hardening. “This changes everything, Maya. This is beyond ‘temperament.’ This is criminal intent. And I won’t let her do it again.”

He looked at me, his gaze firm. “What do you want to do with this?”
