I finished the surgery, closing Senator Hollings’ wound with meticulous precision. He was stable, for now. The operating room hummed with the slow, steady rhythm of the ventilator.

Arthur watched me peel off my blood-stained gloves. “See? That wasn’t so hard,” he said, a patronizing smile on his face. “Just sign the affidavit, and we can all move on.”

He pushed the same dishonorable discharge papers and the “confession” across the counter. The pen lay next to it, glinting under the lights. My hand tightened around the stolen ledger, hidden beneath my scrub top.

“I need a moment to review Senator Hollings’ post-op vitals,” I said, my voice flat. “Standard procedure.”

He hesitated, then waved a dismissive hand. “Fine. But don’t take all night, Evelyn. Your career hangs in the balance.”

I walked out of the OR, my heart pounding, the weight of the ledger pressing against my skin. I needed help, but who could I trust in this place? Everyone knew Arthur. Everyone respected his rank.

The main hospital lobby was a chaotic symphony of human suffering and mundane waiting. Wounded soldiers lay on gurneys, their families clustered around them, faces etched with worry. A young orderly hummed a Motown tune as he swept a pile of dust.

My eyes scanned the crowd, desperate. Then I saw him. A man in a crisp uniform, not medical scrubs, sat alone, flipping through a thick legal brief. His posture was too straight, his glasses too scholarly for the usual grunt waiting for a doctor. He had a Captain’s insignia.

His name tag read: “Captain M. Hollis, JAG.”

JAG. Judge Advocate General. A military lawyer. A flicker of hope ignited in my chest. This was a stranger, unconnected to Arthur’s web of influence.

I approached him, my heart thumping against my ribs. “Captain Hollis?”

He looked up, his eyes sharp and intelligent behind his glasses. “Yes, Doctor?”

“My name is Dr. Evelyn Delaney,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. “I… I need urgent legal counsel. It’s about a medical cover-up. A very serious one.”

His gaze sharpened further, taking in my blood-spattered scrubs and the tense set of my jaw. He clearly saw the urgency.

“This isn’t exactly the place for it,” he said, gesturing vaguely at the bustling lobby. “But I have a few minutes. What’s happened?”

I glanced around, ensuring no one was listening. “I just performed emergency surgery on Senator Hollings. Julian Montgomery botched it. My husband, Dr. Arthur Montgomery, is trying to frame me for it.”

Captain Hollis’s eyebrows rose. “Julian Montgomery? That’s quite a name to drop.” He paused. “And your husband is Dr. Arthur Montgomery, the Chief Surgical Officer?”

I nodded, feeling the dampness of the ledger against my skin.

“I found something,” I said, keeping my voice low. “Something that proves this isn’t the first time Arthur has covered for Julian. It implicates a military auditor named Silas Pendelton, too.”

He leaned forward, a flicker of professional interest in his eyes. “A cover-up? How serious?”

“Fatal,” I replied, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. “At least three prior incidents, according to this.” I reached inside my scrubs, pulling out the leather-bound ledger.

He looked at the book, then at my face, a silent question passing between us. This was it. My chance.
