When Her Corrupt Surgeon Husband Forced Black Military Doctor Evelyn To Cover Up His Son's $2,000,000 Surgical Malpractice On A U.S. Senator In 1968, She Exposed The Truth
The General Staff’s temporary tribunal room was a stark, austere space. Folding tables served as desks for the panel of three senior officers, their faces grim and unyielding. Arthur Montgomery sat at one table, impeccably dressed in his dress uniform, a lawyer from military legal aid beside him. Silas Pendelton, pale and sweating, sat next to Arthur.
I sat at the opposite table, Captain Hollis at my side. The air was thick with tension, the distant rumble of artillery a constant reminder of our wartime setting.
The Commanding General, a formidable woman with steely gray hair, opened the proceedings. “We are here to investigate allegations of medical malpractice, fraud, and dereliction of duty concerning the emergency surgery performed on Senator Reginald Hollings.”
Arthur’s lawyer stood first, his voice smooth and practiced. “General, members of the panel. My client, Chief Surgical Officer Dr. Arthur Montgomery, presents this sworn affidavit, signed by Dr. Evelyn Delaney, acknowledging full responsibility for Senator Hollings’ condition due to her delayed response to a critical vascular emergency.”
He placed a copy of the “confession” Arthur had tried to force me to sign on the table before the panel. Pendelton leaned forward, a flicker of smugness returning to his eyes.
“Furthermore,” the lawyer continued, “we have sworn testimony from Auditor Silas Pendelton, confirming that Dr. Delaney resisted orders, jeopardized patient care, and has a history of insubordination.”
Pendelton cleared his throat, pushing his glasses up his nose. “Yes, General. Dr. Delaney has, shall we say, a pattern of difficulty adhering to standard protocols. Her recent actions, particularly her refusal to sign official documentation, further attest to this.”
I felt a surge of indignation. The blatant lies were sickening. They were painting me as the villain, using Arthur’s fabricated narrative and Pendelton’s complicity. Arthur shot me a triumphant glance, his lips twitching into a thin smile.
My hands clenched under the table. I wanted to leap up, to shout the truth, to expose their corruption right then and there. Every fiber of my being screamed to defend myself.
Captain Hollis subtly placed a hand on my arm, a silent signal to hold my ground. He was giving me a stern look, a reminder of our strategy.
“General,” Captain Hollis said, his voice calm, cutting through the lawyer’s pronouncements. “If I may.”
The General nodded, her gaze moving from Arthur to Captain Hollis.
“We have compelling evidence that refutes these claims,” Captain Hollis stated, his voice gaining strength. “Evidence that exposes a far deeper conspiracy of fraud and criminal negligence. But first, I wish to present the details of the immediate medical situation.”
He picked up a file. “Dr. Evelyn Delaney, under duress, single-handedly repaired a complete femoral artery transection, a near-fatal injury caused by gross surgical incompetence. She not only stabilized Senator Hollings, but saved his life. The ‘delays’ cited were due to the severity of the injury, not Dr. Delaney’s actions.”
Arthur scoffed, but Captain Hollis held the panel’s attention. This was it. The real fight was about to begin.
