Chapter 12: A Clean Fresh Start

The heavy oak front door of the Albright estate vibrated with a sharp, insistent knock. Eleanor, her face now a mask of furious composure, smoothed down her silk blouse.

“Don’t say a word, David,” she ordered, her voice low and sharp. “This is a misunderstanding. Nothing more.”

David, looking utterly bewildered, merely nodded, still staring at me. He couldn’t quite process that I had acted. That I had called for help.

Two uniformed Sheriff deputies entered the kitchen, their presence immediately dwarfing the opulent space. One, a stern-faced woman with a neatly pulled-back braid, held a tablet. The other, a tall, calm man, scanned the room. Their eyes fell on Lily, then the dog bowl, then David, and finally, my red cheek.

“Mrs. Holbrook-Albright?” the female deputy asked, her gaze direct.

“Maya Holbrook,” I corrected, my voice steady. “And this is my daughter, Lily.” I kept Lily tucked close behind me.

“We received an emergency alert from a GPS tracking device registered to Lily,” the male deputy stated, his voice even. “Along with a live audio feed.”

Eleanor scoffed, a brittle sound. “Audio feed? This is preposterous. A child’s toy, I presume. My son and I were simply having a family discussion.”

The female deputy’s brow furrowed. She tapped something on her tablet. A low, distorted sound began to emanate from the device. My own voice, thin and strained, followed by David’s angry retort. Then the sickening slap.

The deputies exchanged a glance. The audio continued, capturing Eleanor’s dismissive comments and my quiet command to David. It was all there, stark and undeniable.

David paled further, recognizing the sounds of his own aggression. Eleanor’s eyes, usually so sharp, now held a hint of genuine alarm. The pendant, a small butterfly charm on Lily’s silver chain, had been her idea, a “safety measure” for our daughter. She never imagined it would be used against them.

“Mr. Albright,” the male deputy said, his tone hardening. “We heard the altercation. And the slap.” He pointed to my face. “That constitutes domestic assault.”

“Assault?” David stammered, his bravado crumbling. “She instigated it! She was yelling!”

“The recording indicates otherwise,” the female deputy countered, her finger hovering over the tablet screen. “And we see no visible injuries on you.”

She walked over to David. “Sir, you’re coming with us for questioning. You have the right to remain silent…”

David spluttered protests, but the male deputy was already moving to secure his hands behind his back. The metallic click of handcuffs echoed in the silent kitchen.

Eleanor, recovering from her shock, stepped forward, her voice like shards of ice. “You’ll regret this, Maya. You just signed your own legal annihilation. My attorneys will ensure you lose everything. Your firm, your reputation, and most certainly, your daughter.”

Her words were meant to terrify, to remind me of her power. But as I watched David being led away, looking smaller and weaker than I’d ever seen him, a different feeling bloomed. It was fear, yes, but also a fierce, protective resolve. And a sliver of hope.

The female deputy looked at me. “Mrs. Holbrook, we’ll need you to come to the station to file a full statement and an emergency protective order. We can ensure Lily’s safety until then.”

I nodded, clutching Lily tighter. Eleanor’s threat still hung in the air, but for the first time in years, I felt like I wasn’t alone. Julian’s face flashed in my mind. He would know what to do.
