The FBI field office in downtown Atlanta loomed, a cold, imposing structure of glass and steel. It was nothing like the warm, wooden chapels of the compound, or the greasy intimacy of Earl’s garage. I felt a knot of dread tighten in my stomach.

Still, the USB drive felt like a burning coal in my pocket. I knew what I had to do.

Inside, past security checkpoints and sterile corridors, I was directed to Special Agent David Fletcher. He was a man of quiet authority, his suit perfectly pressed, his eyes clear and direct. He sat across from me in a sparsely furnished interview room, a legal pad open before him.

“Marcus Hollis?” he asked, his voice even.

“Yes, sir.”

I slid the USB drive across the polished table. “This is everything. It proves Evelyn Albright and Arthur Pendelton embezzled $1.2 million from the Grace Seed Charity Fund.”

He inserted the drive into a government-issued laptop, his fingers moving quickly over the keyboard. I watched his face, searching for any flicker of emotion, any sign he believed me. His expression remained neutral, unreadable.

He spent nearly an hour reviewing the documents, scrolling through wire confirmations, bank statements, and shell company registrations. The silence in the room was heavy, punctuated only by the soft hum of the computer.

Finally, he looked up, his gaze meeting mine. “This is substantial, Marcus. Federal jurisdiction. The wire transfers, the scale of the alleged fraud… it’s all here.”

A wave of relief washed over me, so potent it made my head spin. He believed me. This was real.

“So, you can get the money back?” I asked, my voice edged with a desperate hope. “For Maya’s care? For the other kids?”

Agent Fletcher leaned forward, his expression softening slightly, though a grim line appeared between his brows. “We can initiate an immediate asset freeze on all ministry accounts. That means no more money moving, no more embezzlement. It means we can secure the funds for a full investigation and, potentially, restitution.”

He paused, letting his words sink in. “But you need to understand the immediate impact. If we freeze their accounts today, every single financial pipeline for The Covenant of Grace Ministries stops. Including Maya’s clinical care funds at the compound’s medical facility.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. “What?”

“The ministry bankrolls the compound clinic,” he explained, his voice gentle but firm. “If those accounts are frozen, the clinic won’t be able to buy specialized medications, secure consultations, or arrange transfers. It could put her care on hold indefinitely, at least until we can sort out alternative arrangements, which can take days, even weeks.”

He presented me with an affidavit, its stark white paper a contrast to the complex data I’d just handed him. “Your signature authorizes the freeze. It triggers everything. But you need to be absolutely clear about the immediate consequences for your sister.”

The words echoed in the small room. My sister. Maya. The picture of her pale, suffering face flashed in my mind. Pendelton had framed me, stolen my future. But this… this was a choice between immediate justice and Maya’s immediate well-being.

Between stopping the bleeding and keeping her alive.

The air grew heavy with the impossible decision. My hand hovered over the signature line, the pen feeling impossibly heavy.
