After Emergency Surgery, My Husband Married His Mistress And Emptied My Inherited Home
The days that followed Brenda’s call stretched into a tense, silent war. Arthur continued his charade of the concerned husband, and I, the recovering invalid, played my part, observing him with a detached vigilance. Every sweet gesture felt like a poison pill.
I spent hours in my study, a room Arthur rarely entered, quietly researching “Evergreen Holdings LLC.” The public information was sparse, a shell company with a registered address in a nondescript office building downtown. Nothing directly linked Arthur. He was too smart for that.
Robert’s words kept circling in my mind: “We need concrete, undeniable evidence.” But how to find it when Arthur had covered his tracks so meticulously?
One morning, as I scrolled through old emails, hoping for some forgotten clue, a new message popped up in my inbox. The sender was listed only as “Anonymous.” My heart gave a startled jump.
The subject line read: “Regarding Evergreen Holdings LLC.”
I clicked it open, my fingers trembling slightly.
The email was short, formal, and to the point.
“Eleanor Albright,” it began, “I am a former associate of Evergreen Holdings LLC. I have become aware of serious discrepancies in some of the company’s recent dealings, particularly those connected to a transaction involving a significant sum transferred from a personal residential property. I believe you may be a victim of these discrepancies.”
A wave of dizzying hope washed over me. This was it. Someone knew. Someone was willing to help.
“I have information that could be crucial,” the email continued. “I am prepared to share it with you. I believe Arthur Albright is deeply involved in these activities. Please respond to this email if you are interested in a private, confidential meeting.”
I stared at the screen, my mind racing. Who was this person? A disgruntled employee? A conscience-stricken partner? Could it be Cynthia? The thought crossed my mind, but the formal tone suggested otherwise.
I immediately drafted a response, eager to arrange a meeting, to finally get some answers. My fingers hovered over the keyboard, but Robert’s warning about needing to be smart, about Arthur’s cunning, stopped me. I needed to be cautious. This could be a trap.
I decided to call Robert first.
As I reached for my phone, another email notification flashed across the screen. From the same “Anonymous” sender. It had arrived just seconds after the first.
My stomach dropped.
The new subject line read: “Urgent Update.”
I clicked it, my heart pounding.
“Eleanor,” the second email stated, “I regret to inform you that I am no longer able to assist. Circumstances have changed rapidly and unexpectedly. It has become too dangerous for me to get involved. I am truly sorry.”
My breath hitched. Too dangerous? What had happened? Had Arthur found out? Had he silenced this person? The fear that had been a dull throb in my life suddenly sharpened into a cold, piercing spike.
The email ended abruptly. No contact details, no further explanation. Just a sense of hurried, desperate withdrawal.
But there was an attachment. A single file.
Its name: “Albright_Legacy.mp4.”
I stared at the screen, a mix of despair and intense curiosity churning within me. The source of my potential salvation had vanished as quickly as it had appeared, leaving behind only a cryptic digital breadcrumb.
I clicked on the attachment, but nothing happened. A small pop-up window informed me: “File cannot be opened. Unknown format or encryption.”
Frustration welled up, hot and bitter. I had the key, or at least a piece of it, but it was locked away, tantalizingly out of reach. It was like holding a treasure map written in a language I couldn’t understand.
I called Robert immediately, my voice tight with urgency.
“I received an anonymous email,” I explained, quickly relaying the contents of both messages and the encrypted file. “They backed out, Robert. Someone tried to help, and then they were silenced.”
Robert listened, his usual calm replaced by a new level of concern.
“This is concerning, Eleanor,” he admitted. “It suggests Arthur’s reach is wider than we thought, or that whoever this associate was, they genuinely feared retaliation. It also suggests there’s real, damaging information to be found.”
“What about the file?” I pressed. “Albright_Legacy.mp4. It’s encrypted. Can we open it?”
“An MP4 file usually indicates a video,” Robert mused. “Encryption isn’t insurmountable, but it will take time and specialized resources. I’ll need you to forward me the email and the attachment immediately. I have contacts who can attempt to decrypt it, but there are no guarantees, and it won’t be quick.”
He paused.
“In the meantime, Eleanor, be extremely careful,” he warned. “This anonymous contact disappearing suggests Arthur might be feeling pressure, and cornered individuals can be dangerous. Do not let him know you received this, or that you have this file. Maintain your current facade.”
His words sent a shiver down my spine. Arthur, dangerous? It was a difficult thought to reconcile with the charming, gentle man I had loved for decades. But the man who had subtly changed our prenup, who had mortgaged my home, who was now systematically discrediting me to our friends – that man was capable of anything.
I felt a chilling sense of being watched, of forces moving in the shadows. The thought of what might be on that video file, what truth it might hold, consumed me. Was it definitive proof of Arthur’s fraud? A confession? A revelation that would finally shatter his lies?
I forwarded the emails and the file to Robert, my fingers still trembling. The silence in my study felt heavier now, charged with unseen threats. I had a potential weapon, a digital ghost in the machine, but it remained inert, its secrets locked away.
For the first time since my surgery, I felt a flicker of hope that wasn’t immediately extinguished by a fresh wave of betrayal. But it was a fragile hope, laced with a growing sense of fear. Arthur was moving. And now, so was I.
