Chapter 5: Chloe’s Leaked Emails

#content-1

Chloe Jenkins’ confession hung in the air, heavier than the humid Savannah evening. Forging my signature. Loan default notices. Walt’s obsession. It was all spiraling into something far more sinister than I had imagined.

“Why are you telling me this, Chloe?” I asked, lowering my voice. We were still standing by her car, the last light fading from the sky.

She wrung her hands. “I can’t stomach it anymore. I’ve been with Mr. Kincaid for seven years. I know how he operates. This isn’t just business; it’s cruel. And Eleanor… she doesn’t deserve this.”

“What kind of documents did he forge?”

“Loan default notices for the estate, primarily,” she explained, her voice gaining a desperate edge. “He backdated them. Made it look like you had mismanaged funds for years, creating a paper trail to justify foreclosure. He had Sibley re-appraise the property *after* he’d already secured the commercial zoning reclassification. It was all designed to make it look like a legitimate financial collapse.”

The sheer scale of Walt’s deception was staggering.

“Do you have proof?” I asked, thinking of the audio recording I’d just secured. Proof was everything.

Chloe nodded, her gaze fixed on the darkening road. “I’ve been archiving everything. Encrypted emails, internal ledgers, meeting minutes. He thought he was being clever, but I made copies.”

“Copies of what, exactly?”

“Emails discussing the commercial zoning with city officials months ago. Emails instructing Sibley on the valuation. Internal notes where he detailed how he would bankrupt Eleanor’s estate, force her into a corner, make her dependent on him. He even wrote about how he believed he could then ‘save’ her and she’d finally see his true affection.”

A deep, unsettling chill ran through me. Walt wasn’t just after money or revenge. He truly believed he was some kind of twisted savior, forcing Eleanor into a position where she would have no choice but to turn to him. It was a terrifying, possessive delusion.

“It’s all on a secure drive,” Chloe continued, pulling a small, discreet USB stick from her handbag. “It’s encrypted. I’ll give you the password, but you have to promise to protect me. If he finds out, I’m ruined.”

“You’ll be protected,” I vowed, taking the drive. It felt incredibly small, yet contained enough evidence to shatter Walt’s entire scheme. “What made you decide to do this now?”

“He’s moving too fast,” she whispered. “He plans to initiate foreclosure proceedings on Eleanor’s estate next week, using those fraudulent default notices. He wants it done before anyone can question the zoning change. There isn’t much time left.”

The urgency in her voice was palpable. Next week. Walt intended to move for the kill. This wasn’t just about my reputation anymore; it was about saving Eleanor’s entire future, her home, her peace of mind. Chloe had just handed me the weapon to fight back.
