The moment Julian recognized the Kensington seal, a guttural sound tore from Eleanor’s throat. She stared at the 1924 receipt in my hand, her face a mask of disbelief and pure, unadulterated fury.

“That’s a fake!” she shrieked, pointing at the document. “A worthless piece of antique paper! It means nothing! This is De Witt land now!”

She pivoted sharply, her eyes landing on the two private security guards she still retained, hulking figures in plain suits who had been standing by the elevator, trying to look inconspicuous.

“Seize that document!” Eleanor commanded, her voice shrill and desperate. “Get it from her! Now!”

The two guards, caught between federal agents and Eleanor’s frantic orders, hesitated for only a moment. Then, driven by years of unquestioning loyalty—or perhaps the promise of a significant payday—they moved. They were big men, trained to intimidate, not to fight armed federal marshals.

They lunged towards me.

Before they could take a second step, Gideon’s tactical team, who had been silently observing the entire exchange, moved with synchronized precision. It was like watching a perfectly choreographed dance of force.

The first guard, a burly man with a shaved head, found himself surrounded in an instant. A black-clad Kensington operative grabbed his arm, twisted it behind his back, and slammed him against the wall, all in one fluid motion. A muffled grunt escaped the guard’s lips as his wrist was cuffed.

The second guard, faster, tried to flank one of Gideon’s men, aiming for me. But another Kensington operative was already there, blocking his path. A swift, economic movement, and the guard was on the floor, disarmed, his own sidearm skittering across the marble.

It was over in less than ten seconds. The two guards lay on the ground, groaning softly, their wrists bound with zip ties. Their personal sidearms and radios were swiftly confiscated.

Federal marshals, who had been observing the scene from the perimeter of the penthouse, moved in then, completing the encirclement. Their uniforms were stark against the opulent décor. The glint of their badges was unmistakable.

Eleanor watched her private security detail get disarmed with wide, horrified eyes. Her breath hitched. She was utterly exposed. Julian, beside her, stood frozen, hands half-raised in a gesture of surrender to no one in particular. He looked utterly lost.

“You can’t do this!” Eleanor whimpered, her voice finally breaking. “This is my home! You have no right to send armed thugs into my residence!”

Gideon stepped in front of her, blocking her view of her disarmed guards. His face was devoid of emotion. “These aren’t thugs, Eleanor. They are highly trained operatives of the Kensington Global Security Group, operating under the full authority of the U.S. District Court. And as for your home, that’s precisely what we’re here to discuss.”

He looked at me, a silent confirmation. I held the 1924 receipt carefully, feeling the fragile power of it in my hands. The game was truly over for them.
