The transition from the wind-swept rooftop to the glittering ballroom of the Pierre Hotel was jarring. One moment, Eleanor was clutching a federal warrant; the next, Gideon and I were walking into a room humming with Manhattan’s financial elite.

Gideon had insisted we make a public statement. “We need to expose Kroll where it hurts him most,” he’d said, “in front of everyone he seeks to impress.”

The Grand Ballroom smelled of lilies and expensive cologne. Chandeliers dripped light onto a sea of black ties and designer gowns. A string quartet played Vivaldi. It was Kroll’s annual charity gala, a networking event cloaked in philanthropy.

I spotted Garrett Kroll by the champagne fountain. He was a portly man, his bald head gleaming, laughing boisterously with a group of investors. He saw us. His smile faltered, then vanished.

Word spread quickly. A hush fell over the room as Gideon and I, flanked by two of his legal counsel, approached Kroll. The Vivaldi died out, replaced by the murmurs of curious onlookers.

“Mr. Kroll,” Gideon’s voice cut through the silence, amplified by the sudden stillness. “We have a few questions regarding the authenticity of certain property deeds you’ve notarized.”

Kroll’s face went pasty. His gaze flickered to a man in a dark suit by the buffet, then back to Gideon. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. All my work is impeccable.”

One of Gideon’s lawyers stepped forward, holding up a blown-up scan of a document. It was a faded, official-looking paper with Eleanor’s signature and Kroll’s notary seal.

“This, for instance, Mr. Kroll,” the lawyer said, his voice ringing with authority. “A deed for the De Witt Residential Complex, dated 2003. Odd, considering our forensics team has identified microscopic inconsistencies in the ink and paper, dating it to no earlier than 2010.”

A ripple went through the crowd. Reporters, who seemed to have materialized out of nowhere, began snapping photos and shouting questions.

“It’s a forgery, isn’t it, Mr. Kroll?” I asked, my voice clear and steady. The words felt foreign on my tongue, powerful and sharp.

Kroll’s bravado completely cracked. Sweat beaded on his forehead. He gulped, his eyes darting frantically around the room, searching for an escape that wasn’t there.

“No, I… I mean… Eleanor, she… she made me!” he stammered, pointing a trembling finger towards the entrance, as if Eleanor herself would burst in to save him. “She threatened me! My business, my family!”

The cameras flashed, capturing his desperate, incriminating confession.

“Threatened you to forge documents for her decade-long property fraud scheme, Mr. Kroll?” Gideon pressed, his voice relentless.

Kroll buried his face in his hands. “Yes! She told me if I didn’t, she’d ruin me. She said she had dirt on everyone. She forced me to backdate and create false deeds for a dozen buildings, not just this one!”

The revelation hung in the air like a thunderclap. The city’s elite whispered, appalled. This wasn’t just about my building; it was about an entire network of fraud impacting potentially hundreds of families. Kroll had just implicated Eleanor De Witt, and himself, in a massive criminal enterprise, live, in front of everyone who mattered.
