The wind whipped around me, tearing at my hair and the thin silk of my dress as I stepped onto the penthouse terrace. The air tasted of ozone and a coming storm. Julian’s hand, which had just struck me, fell away as if burned.

He and Eleanor stood frozen by the floor-to-ceiling windows, their faces pale beneath the flashing red strobes of the landing lights. The noise of the approaching helicopter was deafening, a monstrous beating pulse in the sky above us.

A heavy tactical helicopter, dark as a storm cloud, descended slowly, its landing gear extending. On its side, a silver griffin, claws outstretched, gleamed in the artificial light—the Kensington crest. My family’s crest.

The moment its skids touched down, the side hatch slid open. Six figures in black tactical gear, armed and moving with precision, streamed out. They were all tall, their faces obscured by dark visors.

One of them, broader than the others, removed his helmet. It was Gideon. My older brother, Gideon Kensington, the man who ran my family’s global security and real estate empire. His eyes, usually sharp and cool, held a simmering fury as he scanned the terrace.

Eleanor, recovering her composure with a gasp of pure rage, darted forward. She clutched a thick stack of papers in her trembling hand.

“You! This is private property!” she shrieked over the rotor wash, her voice cracking. “I am serving you with an immediate eviction notice, effective now! This is illegal trespass!”

She lunged towards Gideon, holding out the documents, the edges flapping wildly in the rotor-churned air. Her face was contorted, utterly oblivious to the armed guards surrounding her.

Gideon didn’t even flinch. He just held up a hand.

One of his men, a giant of a man with an impassive face, stepped between Eleanor and my brother. He gently, but firmly, pushed her hand down. The eviction papers fluttered uselessly to the ground.

“Get off my property!” Eleanor screamed, trying to kick at the guard’s shins. Her manicured foot, encased in an expensive pump, glanced off his armored boot.

Gideon finally met my gaze across the wind-swept concrete. A silent question passed between us. I lifted my chin, a silent command.

He gave a sharp nod.
