Chapter 21: Two Years Later

Sera Maxwell, Julian’s fiancée, fidgeted with the delicate lace trim of her wedding dress, her expression clouded. She was at a final fitting, surrounded by her maid of honor and a flurry of stylists, but her mind was clearly elsewhere. Julian’s increasingly erratic behavior had started to chip away at her perfectly curated image of their fairytale romance.

“He’s just… so stressed lately,” Sera confided in her maid of honor, Bethany, her voice a low murmur. “About the finances. And the guest list. And everything.”

Bethany, a pragmatic woman, looked at her sympathetically. “Weddings are stressful, Sera. Especially one this size. And Julian always seems to be juggling a million things for his ‘brand’.”

“It’s more than that,” Sera insisted, a frown creasing her smooth forehead. “He snaps at the caterers, he yells at his assistant, and he keeps disappearing for ‘urgent calls’ in the middle of dinner. He’s not sleeping well.”

She paused, plucking at a loose bead on her gown. “He keeps saying there are ‘complications’ with the payments, and that some of his ‘business ventures’ are having ‘minor cash flow issues.’ Like my father wouldn’t notice if his payments were late.”

Bethany, though concerned, still leaned into the narrative Julian carefully cultivated. “Well, he’s a rising star, isn’t he? All those endorsement deals and reality TV pitches. High pressure. High stakes. You’re marrying into fame, Sera.”

Sera offered a weak smile. “I know. It’s just… he’s so secretive about it. And sometimes he gets this look in his eyes, like he’s running from something.”

She recalled a moment just last week. Julian had been on a call, his voice hushed, then he had slammed his burner phone down on the table, muttering something about “untraceable debts” and “back channels.” When she’d asked, he’d simply brushed it off as “industry drama.”

“He even said something about ‘that bitter ex,’ Evelyn,” Sera added, lowering her voice further. “He thinks she’s trying to sabotage him, playing dirty tricks.”

Bethany rolled her eyes. “Please. Evelyn Reed? She’s a ghost. Never seen her at a single party. Just another jealous ex. Julian’s too hot for her to handle, obviously.”

Sera nodded, comforted by the familiar dismissal. Julian’s narrative about Evelyn, the “jealous ex,” provided a convenient, easy-to-understand villain for any minor bumps in the road. It neatly explained away any financial hiccups or minor PR issues as external attacks rather than internal failings.

“It’s just the pressure,” Sera repeated, trying to convince herself more than Bethany. “He’s under so much pressure to make this wedding perfect. To prove he’s a major player.”

She glanced at her reflection in the mirror, her expression still tinged with a faint unease. She was an image-obsessed socialite, accustomed to a world where problems were smoothed over by money and good PR. The idea that Julian might be anything less than the charming, successful man he presented himself to be was too jarring to fully accept.

“I just want this to be over,” Sera said, her voice sounding tired. “I want to be married, to put all this stress behind us.”

She still didn’t question Julian’s love or his intentions. Her unease stemmed from the inconvenience of the “wedding stress” and the vague financial shadows, not from a deeper understanding of his deceit. She saw red flags, but dismissed them as minor aesthetic flaws in her perfect fairytale, rather than fundamental structural weaknesses.

“It’ll be beautiful, Sera,” Bethany assured her, picking up a satin swatch. “The most talked-about wedding of the year. Don’t let anything spoil it.”

Sera forced a smile. She wanted to believe her. She truly did. But the image of Julian’s panicked face, the hushed phone calls, and the lingering scent of desperation were becoming harder and harder to ignore. Her world was built on glamour and surface appearances, and Julian was now showing cracks in that glossy veneer. She just didn’t know what to do about it.
