The boardroom clock ticked loudly, each second stretching into an eternity. Eleanor’s face hardened as I pressed for more detailed medical reports on Barnaby and a comprehensive psychological assessment of Chloe, insisting on full transparency before any vote. The other board members, initially siding with Eleanor’s narrative of swift action, began to look uncomfortable. My questions, cloaked in professional diligence, were chipping away at her carefully constructed facade.

“These are merely delay tactics, Ms. Lin,” Eleanor finally snapped, her voice losing its polished edge. “The facts are clear. Chloe’s instability is evident, and her guardianship needs immediate transfer for her own good.”

Just as she slammed her hand lightly on the table, the double doors at the back of the boardroom opened. Julian Dax wheeled in a large, covered birdcage on a small cart.

A collective murmur rippled through the room. Eleanor’s eyes narrowed, a confused frown creasing her brow. Julian, his face stoic, uncovered the cage. Inside, perched regally on a swing, was Echo, the African Grey parrot. His intelligent, unblinking eyes surveyed the room.

Julian quietly placed the cage on a side table, just a few feet from the central mahogany table where Eleanor was presenting. Echo ruffled his grey feathers, adjusting to the new environment.

“Julian, what is the meaning of this?” Eleanor demanded, her voice sharp with barely concealed fury. “This is a corporate board meeting, not a pet show!”

Arthur, who had been sitting in stony silence, looked up, surprised. “Echo? What’s he doing here?”

“I believed his presence might… illuminate certain discussions, Mr. Albright,” Julian said, his voice flat and even. He then quietly resumed his seat, avoiding Eleanor’s glare.

Eleanor scoffed, waving a dismissive hand. “Nonsense. He’s just a bird. Now, as I was saying, these affidavits from the estate staff clearly detail Chloe’s increasing forgetfulness, her disregard for Barnaby’s feeding schedule, and her general disassociation. They are signed by multiple household employees, corroborating the need for a more structured, protective environment—namely, revoking her trust.”

She held up a stack of documents. Her voice, smooth and practiced, droned on, listing fabricated instances of Chloe’s neglect. The room grew quiet, the board members flipping through their copies of the “affidavits.”

Then, from the side table, a voice cut through the silence. Not Julian’s, not mine, but an eerily accurate mimicry of Eleanor’s own tone.

“Julian, darling,” Echo squawked, his head cocked to one side. The voice was unmistakable—Eleanor’s, a touch of conspiratorial glee in it. “The Corgi. Just a small dose. Enough to make him look… careless.”

The entire room froze. Board members stared, their faces a tableau of confusion and disbelief. Eleanor’s jaw dropped, her eyes wide with horror.

Echo, seemingly pleased with the attention, fluffed his feathers again. “Organophosphate, remember? The little bottle. So easy. Chloe will take the blame. $40 million trust. All ours.”

The parrot repeated the phrase, clear as a bell, Eleanor’s exact inflection, her specific words, right there in the hushed boardroom. The sound hit the assembled directors like a physical blow. Their eyes darted from the bird to a now ashen Eleanor. The air crackled with stunned silence.
