When an Outsider Trustee Discovers Her Corporate Neighbor Poisoned a $40 Million Heiress's Corgi to Steal Estate Control, an African Grey Parrot and an Accidentally Found Document Expose the Gaslig...
Arthur’s demand for a full accounting hung in the air, a final, thunderous judgment against Eleanor. His eyes, usually so clouded by grief, were now alight with a cold, righteous fury. Eleanor, trapped, her carefully woven web of lies unraveling before her very eyes, stammered, attempting to concoct another desperate explanation.
“Arthur, darling, it’s a misunderstanding! Maya is fabricating—”
Suddenly, the lights flickered violently. The boardroom, bathed in the bright midday sun moments before, plunged into a dim, flickering gloom as the emergency lights kicked on. A low hum filled the air, then died, leaving an unsettling silence. The hum of the estate’s ventilation system, usually a constant companion, ceased.
A board member at the far end of the table yelped, knocking over his water glass. The sound of shattering glass was jarring in the sudden quiet.
Then, from outside the compound, a deep, guttural thud echoed, followed by the distant screech of grinding metal. It sounded like a gate being forcibly removed. A wave of unease rippled through the room. Everyone looked at each other, confused, then towards the double doors.
Before anyone could react, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom were thrown open with a violent shove. Two large men, dressed in dark, expensive suits, stood framed in the doorway. Their faces were impassive, their eyes scanning the room with chilling efficiency. Behind them, more figures could be glimpsed, moving with a predatory quietness.
Eleanor, who had been attempting to regain some semblance of control, let out a choked cry. Her eyes, already wide with panic from Echo’s testimony, now dilated with abject terror. She knew. She recognized them.
“What is the meaning of this?” Arthur demanded, rising to his feet, his voice still edged with anger, but now laced with a new note of alarm. “Who are you?”
One of the men, a tall figure with a shaved head and a faint scar above his left eye, stepped forward. He ignored Arthur completely, his gaze fixed solely on Eleanor.
“Eleanor Albright,” his voice was flat, devoid of emotion, “Victor Kozlov requires your immediate presence.”
He made a subtle gesture, and the other enforcers fanned out, their movements precise and practiced. The board members recoiled, scrambling away from the encroaching figures. Julian Dax, beside me, stiffened, his earlier confession echoing in my mind. This was Kozlov’s syndicate. They hadn’t come for an explanation or a vote. They had come for Eleanor. The corporate confrontation I had worked so hard to orchestrate was dissolving into something far more primal, far more terrifying.
