Chapter 13: RESOLUTION EPILOGUE — The Following Month

The ballroom shimmered, expectant. David was back at the podium, a fresh glass of champagne in his hand. Chloe stood beside him, radiant and victorious in her emerald gown, a triumphant smile playing on her lips. She clearly believed she had won.

But I knew the truth now.

My eyes met David’s across the glittering expanse of the ballroom. He looked past the two hundred Chicago elite, past the flashing cameras, past Chloe. His gaze found me, standing by the service doors, Julian a steady presence beside me. A flicker of something crossed his face—surprise, then a raw, vulnerable recognition.

He gripped the microphone stand, his knuckles white. The light caught the worry lines etched around his eyes. He had aged in the six months since we’d broken up.

Chloe leaned in, a whisper passing between them, a reminder perhaps of the script he was supposed to follow. David nodded, a jerky motion. He cleared his throat.

“Good evening, everyone,” David’s voice echoed through the vast room, amplified, but sounding hollow. “Thank you all for coming to celebrate…”

He trailed off, his eyes still fixed on mine. The grand, prepared speech, the one Julian had mentioned, seemed to catch in his throat. The confidence that usually defined him, the smooth architect who could command a room, was gone. He looked like a man trapped, desperately searching for an escape.

He looked down at Chloe, then back at me. His shoulders slumped, a silent surrender.

“I… I can’t,” he mumbled into the microphone, the words barely audible over the hum of the crowd.

A ripple went through the room. Chloe’s triumphant smile vanished, replaced by a look of bewildered fury. She stared at him, her eyes narrowing.

“This engagement,” David stammered, his voice cracking, “it… it cannot proceed.”

The words hung in the air, echoing the stunned silence that had fallen over the ballroom. Gasps erupted, whispers multiplying like wildfire. Chloe took a sharp, involuntary step back from him, her face a mask of disbelief and betrayal.

David’s hand shook violently. The champagne flute, crystal-clear and elegant moments before, slipped from his fingers. It hit the podium with a sharp *clink*, then bounced to the marble floor, shattering into a thousand glittering pieces. The sound was surprisingly loud, a punctuation mark on the abrupt end of an illusion.

He didn’t make a heroic speech. He didn’t even look at Chloe again. His shoulders hunched, he dropped the microphone with a dull thud, turning away from the stunned crowd. Without another word, he walked off the podium, past Chloe, his movements hurried and awkward. He headed straight for the service hall, the same corridor I had tried to escape through moments before, disappearing into the muted light.

The ballroom erupted. Chloe stood frozen for a beat, then she spun around, her eyes blazing, searching for David, for an explanation, for someone to blame. Her gaze landed on me, a venomous glare that promised retribution.

But David was gone. He hadn’t fought a grand battle. He had simply… broken. And in his brokenness, he had chosen freedom. The real fight, I knew, was just beginning.
