Chapter 6: The Codicil’s Trap

#content-1

The drive back felt like an eternity, every turn of the wheel bringing me closer to the confrontation, closer to Marcus’s study. Olivia’s words, her specific instructions, replayed in my mind like a coded message: *mahogany desk, carved lions, false bottom, back right corner, underneath the main large drawer.*

I arrived home just before Marcus, slipping back into my “grieving widow” persona. He barely noticed me, preoccupied with a phone call, his voice booming with forced joviality. He was preparing for another dinner, another social event designed to cement his business deal with Serena Davies. My opportunity.

Later that evening, after Marcus had retired to his den with a brandy, believing me to be safely tucked away, I crept towards his seldom-used home office. The door was, as Olivia had said, locked. Marcus, ever the control freak, kept a spare key hidden above the doorframe, a trick I’d learned years ago but never had reason to use. My hand trembled as I reached up, my fingers brushing against the cold metal. The click of the lock seemed deafening in the silent house.

I stepped inside, the air in the room stale, undisturbed. Moonlight filtered through the heavy drapes, casting long, eerie shadows. The room was exactly as Olivia had described: a large, imposing mahogany desk dominated the center, its legs indeed carved with stoic lion heads. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light, undisturbed for years.

My heart pounded, a frantic drumbeat in my chest. This was it. The point of no return. I knew the risk. If Marcus caught me, his rage would be terrifying. But Olivia’s story, the injustice, fueled me.

I approached the desk, my hands clammy. I pulled open the main large drawer on the right side. It was full of old, innocuous papers: faded tax returns from years past, some unused stationery, a few crumpled business cards. Nothing incriminating.

Then I remembered Olivia’s specific detail: *underneath the main large drawer*. I knelt, my fingers tracing the smooth, cool wood of the drawer’s underside. I felt along the back right corner, pressing, probing. My fingers brushed against a tiny seam, almost imperceptible. A barely visible notch.

With a deep breath, I pushed. There was a faint click, and a small, shallow panel, no more than six inches square, swung inward on a hidden hinge. My breath hitched. Inside, nestled amongst more yellowed papers, was a stack of legal documents tied with a faded ribbon.

I pulled them out, my hands shaking. The top document was indeed a prenuptial agreement. My eyes scanned the heading: “Prenuptial Agreement – Marcus Holt and Olivia Maxwell.” Dated decades ago. This was it.

My gaze flew down the pages, searching, until I found what Olivia had mentioned. Page seven, section 4.3, titled “Estate Inheritance and Marital Conduct.” My eyes widened as I read.

*“…Upon the dissolution of this marriage, or in the event of proven marital infidelity or documented financial deception by Marcus Holt against his spouse, a sum equivalent to twenty-five percent (25%) of the Harold Holt Family Trust’s principal assets, as valued at the time of Harold Holt’s passing, shall be immediately transferred to Olivia Maxwell, provided she is the current spouse at the time such conditions are met.”*

And then, the critical, hand-written codicil, dated three years after the original document, signed by Harold Holt himself, and witnessed:

*“**Codicil to Section 4.3:** The provision regarding the transfer of Harold Holt Family Trust assets, as specified above, shall not be nullified by any subsequent marital agreement or waiver signed by the spouse under duress. Furthermore, this clause shall extend to **any future spouse** of Marcus Holt, ensuring that in the event of proven marital infidelity or documented financial deception, the current legal spouse shall inherit the designated twenty-five percent (25%) share of the Harold Holt Family Trust. This measure is intended to safeguard against manipulation and ensure equitable treatment within the Holt family legacy.”*

My vision blurred, not from tears, but from the sheer magnitude of what I was holding. This was Marcus’s greatest secret. His father, seeing his son’s true nature, had created an ironclad trap, a fail-safe against his ambition and cruelty. And not only had he protected Olivia, but he had extended that protection to *any future spouse*. To me.

The document felt alive in my hands, a testament to a father’s deep-seated distrust and a quiet, posthumous justice. Marcus had gone to such lengths to bury this, to force Olivia to sign a new prenuptial that he thought would negate it. But Harold Holt had anticipated even that. He had specified “under duress.” Olivia’s coerced signature meant nothing against this.

I carefully photographed every page with my phone, double-checking for clarity. Then, with an adrenaline-fueled precision, I tucked the documents back into the false bottom, ensuring the panel clicked shut, leaving no trace. I locked the office door, replaced the key, and returned to my room, my mind reeling.

Twenty-five percent of the Harold Holt Family Trust. It wasn’t just a divorce settlement. It was a substantial fortune, a legacy Marcus had desperately tried to secure for himself, free of any accountability. This wasn’t just about financial security; it was about genuine, unequivocal freedom. My mother, in her quiet wisdom, had inadvertently left me the very tool I needed to dismantle Marcus’s control.

The quiet cruelty of the silver spoon, the forced dinner, the humiliation — it all paled in comparison to the calculated, decades-long deception I had just uncovered. Marcus’s plan to isolate and impoverish me was now a sword hanging over his own head. His infidelity, the very thing he used to humiliate me, would now be his financial undoing. The trap was set. And I, his grieving, supposedly helpless wife, held the key.
