Chapter 8: The Next Morning

The night of the Caldwell’s “Women in Business” awards gala arrived, a glittering affair held in the grand ballroom of the town’s most prestigious hotel. Evelyn Caldwell was scheduled to receive the “Pillar of the Community” award. The irony was almost unbearable. I dressed carefully, a simple black dress, wanting to appear composed, formidable. Leo was with a trusted sitter, but his presence, even in absence, fueled my resolve. Liam, looking uncharacteristically nervous in a borrowed suit, met me in the lobby.

“Are you ready for this?” he asked, adjusting his tie.

“As I’ll ever be,” I replied, a knot of anticipation tightening in my stomach. The ballroom was packed, a who’s-who of local society. Elegant gowns, polished smiles, the clinking of champagne glasses. Marcus was there, looking smug beside Chloe, who wore a shimmering, form-fitting dress that subtly accentuated her flat stomach. My heart gave a painful lurch, a momentary echo of the hurt I’d felt from Marcus’s call. But then I reminded myself: that was all a lie.

We found seats discreetly towards the back, near a projector screen displaying various corporate logos. The air buzzed with polite conversation and the low hum of anticipation. Soon, the speeches began. One by one, local dignitaries praised Evelyn Caldwell’s philanthropic efforts and business acumen. Each compliment felt like a fresh stab.

Finally, the moment arrived. Evelyn Caldwell, resplendent in a sapphire gown, ascended the stage to a standing ovation. She radiated confidence, a carefully crafted image of grace and power. As she began her acceptance speech, filled with humble platitudes, Liam gave me a subtle nod.

He reached into his bag, pulling out a small, almost imperceptible device. With a few deft clicks on a tablet hidden beneath the table, the logos on the side screen shifted.

Suddenly, the archived forum post from Evelyn’s disgruntled employee flashed across the screen. The words “creative accounting” and “trust fund snafu” were clearly visible, albeit small. Immediately after, the “Caldwell Legacy Holdings” registration document appeared, prominently displaying Evelyn’s name as the sole director, the PO Box address starkly visible.

A ripple of confusion spread through the tables nearest the screen. A few people squinted, leaning in to read. Whispers started, hushed and questioning. Evelyn, mid-sentence about community spirit, faltered. Her eyes flicked towards the screen, then back to the audience, a strained smile fixed on her face.

“I believe there’s been some… an unfortunate technical difficulty,” Evelyn announced, her voice a little too sharp, forcing a laugh. “Unfounded gossip, of course. Just family matters.” She tried to wave it off, her eyes darting to the technicians at the back of the room, who looked utterly bewildered.

But Liam wasn’t done. Just as Evelyn attempted to regain her composure, the screen changed again. This time, it displayed a text message exchange. The sender’s name was “Marcus Caldwell.” The recipient, “Bestie Mike.”

The texts were stark. Marcus was complaining to his friend about Evelyn. “Mom’s pressuring me hard. Says Chloe ‘needs to be pregnant’ to sell the story. It’s getting ridiculous. I don’t know how much longer Chloe will go along with it.” Another text: “She’s not actually pregnant, dude. It was just to make Elara jealous and to get Mom off my back about the trust. Now Mom wants to announce it at the wedding. I’m totally screwed.”

A gasp erupted from a nearby table. Chloe Davies, Marcus’s new wife, had been sitting with her parents. Her face, which had been beaming moments before, drained of all color. Her eyes, wide with horror, darted from the screen to Marcus.

Marcus, who had been glowering at the screen and Evelyn, now saw Chloe’s face. He knew.

Chloe slowly rose from her seat, her eyes blazing. “Marcus? What is this?” Her voice, usually soft, was a furious hiss. “What texts? What ‘not actually pregnant’? What lie?”

Marcus jumped up, trying to grab her arm. “Chloe, darling, it’s nothing! Just a joke! A silly misunderstanding!”

“A joke?” Chloe shrieked, tears now streaming down her face. “You lied to me? You lied about having our child?” Her voice carried across the stunned ballroom. Everyone was staring now, their polite smiles gone.

Evelyn, still on stage, was openly panicking. She abandoned her speech, stammering, “This is inappropriate! A private family matter!”

But it was too late. Chloe shoved Marcus away, her voice cracking with betrayal. “You told me you wanted a family! You told me you loved me! Was any of it real, Marcus? Or was I just part of your mother’s scheme?”

Under the intense glare of the assembled guests, the flashing cameras of the local press, and Chloe’s heartbroken fury, Marcus completely crumbled. His carefully constructed facade shattered into a million pieces.

“No! No, Chloe, I… I didn’t want to! Mom made me!” Marcus blurted out, pointing a trembling finger at Evelyn, who looked like she’d been slapped. “She forced me to lie about the pregnancy! She said we had to use the wedding sponsorship to trigger the trust clause for Elara! She promised me a cut if I helped ‘neutralize’ Elara’s claim! She orchestrated everything!”

The ballroom erupted in a cacophony of gasps, shouts, and the frantic clicking of camera shutters. Evelyn Caldwell stood frozen on stage, her face a mask of utter horror. Her perfect world had just imploded. Marcus, her own son, had exposed her.

I watched, numb, as Evelyn grabbed her heavy award from the podium, her sapphire gown rustling, and stumbled off the stage, disappearing through a discreet side door, her public image in tatters. Marcus stood alone, bewildered and disgraced, as Chloe continued to scream at him, her voice raw with heartbreak. Liam gave my arm a tight squeeze. The climax was over. The truth, in all its messy, public glory, had finally burst through.

Her ex-husband invited me to his wedding and mocked my inability to give him a family, but he didn't know I had a son and his new bride wasn't pregnant.
