Chapter 15: Two Weeks Later

The cool, damp air of the baptismal preparation room clung to my skin, smelling faintly of bleach and stale water. Deacon Jamal Washington was methodically refilling the ceremonial pitchers, his young face earnest and focused. He looked so innocent, so eager to please.

It was hard to reconcile the eager young man before me with the unwitting accomplice Silas had used.

“Deacon Jamal,” I said, my voice deliberately calm. He jumped, spilling a little water.

He turned, his eyes wide. “Sister Evelyn! I didn’t see you there.”

“I apologize for startling you,” I replied, stepping closer. “I just had a question about something I found.”

I pulled the small, clear plastic bag from my pocket. Inside, carefully folded, was the price tag I’d found tucked behind one of the “demonic relics” in Micah’s room. It was from a local novelty shop, with “The Mystic Emporium” printed at the top.

“This was behind that carved medallion, the one Elder Silas said was evidence of Micah’s corruption,” I said, holding it out. “It has a price tag on it. From a shop downtown.”

Jamal’s eyes darted to the tag, then back to my face. His youthful features hardened for a moment, a flicker of fear and defiance. “I… I don’t know anything about that, Sister Evelyn.”

He turned back to the pitchers, moving with a jerky, unnatural stiffness.

“Jamal,” I pressed, my voice softening, but leaving no room for escape. “Micah’s life is at stake. His soul is being condemned because of these items. Tell me the truth. Did you put those items in his room?”

His shoulders slumped. He squeezed his eyes shut for a long moment, then slowly opened them. They were brimming with tears.

“Elder Silas,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “He said… he said it was a test of faith. To expose evil in our midst.”

My heart ached for him. He was just a pawn, caught in Silas’s web of lies.

“What did he tell you to do?” I asked, keeping my voice gentle.

“He… he gave me one hundred and fifty dollars,” Jamal confessed, his voice barely audible. “He told me to go to ‘The Mystic Emporium’ and buy specific things. Carved symbols, some books. He said they were ‘spiritual artifacts’ that Micah had been dabbling with, and that God needed them brought to light.”

He wiped a tear from his cheek with the back of his hand. “He told me to put them in Micah’s closet, so they could be ‘discovered’ before the ordination. He said it was for Micah’s own good, to turn him back to the light.”

A fresh wave of anger pulsed through me, hot and sharp. Silas hadn’t just misled Marcus; he had twisted a young deacon’s faith, making him complicit in a cruel deception.

“Did he make you promise not to tell anyone?” I asked, already knowing the answer.

Jamal nodded, his head bowed. “He said it was a sacred trust. That if I spoke, I would be excommunicated for defying God’s messenger.”

He looked up at me, his eyes pleading. “Please, Sister Evelyn, don’t tell Elder Silas I told you.”

I reached out, my hand resting gently on his shoulder. “I won’t. But you have to trust me. What Silas is doing is not God’s work. It’s evil.”

I knew what I had to do next. I needed proof, undeniable proof, to break through Marcus’s blind faith. And Jamal’s confession, raw and painful, was exactly what I needed.
