Chapter 7: The King’s Fall

#content-1

The world erupted.

News outlets, invigorated by Lily’s viral clip and Agnes Albright’s anonymous document dump, seized on the scandal with a voracious appetite.

Robert Monroe’s furious rants, the DNA test results proving he wasn’t my father, the forged death certificates, and the details of Eleanor’s protected trust—it all exploded across every major entertainment channel and gossip site.

“Hollywood Legend’s Dark Secret: Paternity Fraud, Forgery, and Attempted Embezzlement!” screamed one headline.

“Robert Monroe: From Producer to Pariah” declared another.

Detective Davies moved swiftly. Within hours of Agnes Albright’s leak, Robert Monroe was arrested at his mansion. I heard it on the news, a brief segment showing him being led away in handcuffs, his face contorted in a mix of rage and disbelief. He was formally charged with multiple counts of fraud, forgery, and attempted embezzlement of the trust fund.

His once-glowing celebrity image, carefully curated over decades, shattered irrevocably. The industry, ever quick to distance itself from scandal, began to erase him. Old interviews were re-aired, but now with critical commentary. His “legacy” was being rewritten in real-time.

My own life became a whirlwind of media attention. Paparazzi camped outside my house. My phone never stopped ringing with requests for interviews, statements, and comments. Omar, tireless and steadfast, fielded most of it.

“We need to issue a statement, Evie,” he said over the phone, his voice calm amidst the storm. “Something brief, professional. Confirming the facts without sensationalizing.”

“What facts?” I asked, my voice raw. “That my father is a criminal? That my mother kept my true parentage a secret? That my entire life has been a lie?”

“All of it, in a way,” Omar replied gently. “But framed to protect you and Eleanor’s memory. Focus on the justice being served for Eleanor’s true wishes.”

I nodded, even though he couldn’t see me. “Alright, Omar. You draft it. I trust you.”

The statement went out. It was succinct, confirming the DNA results, Robert Monroe’s arrest, and my intent to ensure my mother’s legacy was honored. It didn’t stop the deluge, but it gave a clear, consistent message.

Lily was shell-shocked. Her “private” post had become a global phenomenon, shattering her own innocence about the reach of social media. She deleted her account temporarily, retreating from the online world that had so inadvertently exposed our family’s deepest secrets.

“Mom, I’m so sorry,” she’d whispered, her eyes red-rimmed. “I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”

I held her close. “You brought the truth to light, sweetie. You did nothing wrong. You couldn’t have known.”

But the truth, once revealed, was a blunt instrument. It had cleaved my family apart. Robert was facing a future behind bars, his assets frozen, his reputation ruined. The image of the charming, larger-than-life father I had grown up with was now replaced by the image of a desperate, deceitful man.

And Eleanor. My mother. I had chased justice for her, only to discover a layer of secrecy I hadn’t anticipated. Her love for me was undeniable, but her choice to keep my paternity hidden, even as Robert plotted against me, left a complex ache in my chest.

The immediate future felt a dizzying mix of relief and profound exhaustion. The fight for Eleanor’s estate would now shift to a new phase, ensuring the trust was fully restored and transferred to me. But the emotional toll was immense. How would I ever navigate this new, fractured reality? My family, once a pillar of Hollywood society, was now a public spectacle of betrayal. I felt utterly drained, yet strangely clear-eyed. The path ahead was uncertain, but at least I was walking it with the truth. The ghost of Eleanor’s secrets, and Robert’s deceit, would forever linger.
