Chapter 17: Two Years Later in Ohio

The dull thud of heavy tires on the gravel access road vibrated through the compound. From my vantage point on the flat medical roof, tucked behind a water cistern, I saw the headlights approaching.

Three black SUVs, tinted windows, no identifying marks. They looked like predatory sharks gliding through the night.

These weren’t supply trucks.

The main gate, normally a hive of activity even during lockdown, was eerily quiet. O’Malley’s guards stood at rigid attention, rifles held at their chests, their faces grim.

The lead SUV stopped. The driver’s side window hummed down. A man emerged, tall and powerfully built, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that seemed out of place in the muddy compound. This was Victor Dempsey, the syndicate auditor. His reputation preceded him: brutal, relentless, a clean-up specialist.

He surveyed the compound with a slow, deliberate gaze, his expression unreadable.

Commander O’Malley stepped forward, his posture as stiff and unyielding as granite. He met Dempsey’s gaze without flinching. The air crackled between them.

“Dempsey,” O’Malley greeted, his voice low, devoid of warmth.

“O’Malley,” Dempsey replied, his tone equally flat. “A pleasure, as always. Though I confess, the biohazard quarantine seems… excessive.”

O’Malley didn’t flinch. “Standard protocol. New virulent strain, highly contagious. We’ve been under full containment for almost twenty-four hours. Residential quarters are particularly sensitive.”

I watched, my breath held. The lie was smooth, practiced. O’Malley was trying to keep Dempsey from searching the living areas. From finding me.

But why? If he wanted me dead, why the elaborate charade?

Dempsey’s eyes narrowed, sweeping across the compound. His gaze lingered on the medical tent below me, then on the residential barracks. A flicker of suspicion crossed his face.

“A new strain, you say?” Dempsey asked, a hint of something dangerous in his voice. “From where? I was not informed of any such… development.”

“Unforeseen circumstances,” O’Malley replied, his jaw tight. “Our medical staff is stretched thin. We’re isolating all non-essential personnel.”

Dempsey’s men, hardened enforcers with cold eyes and bulges under their jackets, began to fan out, their presence radiating menace. They moved with a silent, disciplined efficiency that spoke of long years in the dark corners of the underworld.

One of them gestured towards the main barracks. “We’ll need to conduct a full audit, Commander. Every record, every man.”

O’Malley stiffened. “As I said, residential areas are under strict quarantine. Any unauthorized entry risks contamination. You and your men would be exposed.”

Dempsey chuckled, a low, humorless sound. “Contamination or inconvenience, O’Malley? I have my orders. We sweep this facility tonight. Every corner. Every file. No exceptions.”

The standoff was palpable, a silent war of wills. O’Malley was fighting to keep Dempsey out of the residential areas, directly where I would be found.

But for what purpose? Was he protecting me? Or was he protecting something else, something hidden that my presence might expose?

The question gnawed at me. But for now, the conflict brewing between them was a distraction I could use.
