I Was Just a Quiet Civilian Nurse at an Off-Grid Oregon Compound Until the Commander Saw the Trident Tattoo on My Arm and Locked the Compound Gates
The compound had become a battlefield. Gunfire echoed from every direction, punctuated by the occasional distant explosion. Tracers arced through the night sky, painting fleeting streaks of red and green against the low, heavy clouds.
From my perch on the medical roof, I watched O’Malley’s guards, outnumbered but hardened, fight Dempsey’s syndicate enforcers. The chaos was exactly what I’d wanted. It blurred lines, created opportunities.
My makeshift radio, still humming faintly, crackled to life.
“Maya! Are you there? Maya, pick up!” It was Silas, his voice raw with panic.
I snatched the microphone. “Silas? What happened? The line went dead.”
“The syndicate cut me off! They know I’m talking to you!” he gasped, his breath ragged. “Maya, you have to listen. About O’Malley. You’ve got it wrong.”
My blood ran cold. “Wrong? He was there, Silas. You said he was overseeing it.”
“He was! But not like you think!” Silas practically screamed over the static. “He didn’t shoot your brother, Maya! He pulled his body out of the water! After the ambush!”
The words hit me like a physical blow. O’Malley saved my brother? No, that couldn’t be right. He was the one. My nemesis.
“What are you talking about?” I demanded, my voice shaking. “Who killed him, then?”
“A different entity, Maya! A boss from the old days! They were trying to get to your brother’s cargo manifest! O’Malley was trying to warn him, but it was too late. He… he owed your family a debt!”
A debt? My brother’s commanding officer? The pieces of my carefully constructed revenge shattered around me.
“Who?” I pressed, desperation clawing at my throat. “Who killed him? Tell me his name, Silas!”
“His name is… he’s the one who was secretly funding Evelyn, Maya! Your aunt! She never told you, but he was sending her money! Keeping you hidden!”
My great-aunt Evelyn. My last true family. Secretly taking money from the man who murdered my brother? It was unthinkable. A betrayal far deeper than anything I’d imagined.
“Silas! Tell me who!” I shouted into the microphone, but the voice on the other end was dissolving.
The static intensified, a deafening roar. Then a chilling click.
The line went dead again. This time, I knew it was permanent.
