Chapter 12: The Lingering Threat

The following morning, the farm was eerily quiet, the media circus having moved on, at least for the moment. But the lingering feeling of being watched remained. The story of Eleanor Gable’s arrest, the forged deed, and the hidden DNA test was plastered across every local news channel and social media feed. The public pressure was immense.

My phone rang continuously. Lawyers, journalists, even distant relatives I hadn’t heard from in years. I knew I needed to control the narrative, to ensure the truth, as exposed yesterday, remained front and center.

I decided to make an official public statement on behalf of Gable Organic Farm. With Lily napping peacefully inside and Kael guarding the porch, I set up my phone on a tripod, facing the sprawling fields. The sun was rising, casting a golden glow over the crops.

“Good morning, everyone,” I began, my voice calm and measured. “My name is Maya Oakwood, and I manage Gable Organic Farm. Yesterday, many of you witnessed a traumatic event unfold here. I want to thank Deputy Hensley and the community for their swift response and overwhelming support.”

I held up the legal documents once more, speaking directly to the camera. “I have filed formal criminal complaints against Eleanor Gable for felony forgery, animal endangerment, and attempted unlawful eviction. The evidence, including a forged deed, a certified DNA paternity test confirming my daughter Lily’s rightful lineage, and a letter from Eleanor’s late husband detailing her long history of financial fraud, is now in the hands of law enforcement.”

I explained Mark’s vision for the farm, our dedication to organic practices, and my commitment to continue his legacy for Lily. “This farm is more than land; it’s our home, our livelihood, and my daughter’s inheritance. We will fight to protect it with every legal means available.”

I ended by reiterating my trust in the legal process and asking for continued community support. “This is not just about one family; it’s about justice and protecting what’s right.”

The video went live, and within minutes, the comments section was flooded with messages of solidarity. “We stand with Maya!” “Justice for Lily!” “Don’t let Eleanor win!”

Hours later, my lawyer, Mr. Jenkins (the same Mr. Jenkins mentioned in David Gable’s letter), called. He sounded relieved.

“Maya, good news,” he said. “Eleanor’s legal team has officially abandoned their claim on the farm. The public outcry, combined with the evidence of the forged deed and David’s letter, made their position untenable. They’ve withdrawn all civil actions.”

A wave of relief washed over me. One battle won. But Mr. Jenkins’ next words brought me back down to earth.

“However,” he continued, “Eleanor posted bail late last night. It was set at 50,000 USD, and she paid it almost immediately. She’s out.”

My stomach tightened. Eleanor, free.

“She hasn’t given up, Maya,” Mr. Jenkins warned. “She’s a formidable opponent, and she sees this as a personal war. This withdrawal is a tactical retreat, not a surrender. Expect her to come at you from other angles, probably financial. She still has considerable resources.”

He was right. Eleanor wouldn’t give up on the $1.8 million farm that easily. She was humiliated, exposed, and temporarily defeated, but her obsession with the Gable name and legacy ran too deep. She would find another way to strike. The thought of her out there, planning her next move, cast a long shadow over the farm.

The sun still shone, the crops still grew, but the peace was fragile. I had won this skirmish, but the war was far from over. I knew I had to prepare, to fortify not just my legal position, but the very perimeter of our home.

Eleanor was a viper, and she was still loose.
