Kael didn’t wait for my command. He was a veteran, his instincts honed by years of police work. As Tommy’s hand reached for the latch, Kael launched himself forward from the porch, a blur of muscle and fur. He didn’t charge the truck directly. Instead, he swept low, a precise tactical maneuver that took the pitbulls by surprise.

He didn’t bite. He didn’t snarl.

With a speed that defied his age, Kael slid under the truck’s chassis, emerging on the far side of the vehicle just as Tommy wrestled the first pitbull’s crate door open. The pitbull, disoriented by Kael’s sudden appearance from an unexpected angle, was already off balance.

Kael nipped at the unleashed pitbull’s hind leg, a sharp, targeted nip that made the animal yelp and spin, momentarily forgetting its aggression. He repeated the move with the second pitbull, darting in and out, never allowing them to set their feet, never letting them attack *him*. He was herding them, not fighting them.

It was a brilliant display of control, a master disarming two violent aggressors without drawing blood. The pitbulls, frustrated and confused by Kael’s unconventional tactics, started snapping at each other, their aggression turning inward.

Eleanor let out a sharp, frustrated cry. “What are you doing, you worthless dog!” she shrieked, stomping her foot. Her face, usually so composed, contorted with rage.

She lunged forward, not toward me, but toward the truck, as if to regain control of the chaos. Her expensive leather satchel, clutched in her hand, swung wildly.

As she stumbled, still yelling at Kael, the heavy satchel slipped from her grasp. It hit the gravel driveway with a muffled thud, spilling its contents across the dirt. Papers, thick envelopes, and a small, official-looking document scattered.

My eyes immediately fixated on one piece of paper that fluttered open, face-up in the dust. It was a certified court document, its heading clear even from the porch: “DNA Paternity Test Results.”

Next to it, another document lay partially covered by a thick envelope. It looked like an old, legal-sized sheet.

Kael, having successfully turned the pitbulls’ aggression on themselves, circled back toward Eleanor, his tail held high. He nudged a large, official-looking envelope with his nose. It felt like he was showing me what he’d found, a silent offering.

Tommy, meanwhile, stared at the chaotic scene, his mouth agape. The pitbulls were now a growling, snapping mess in the back of the truck, confined to their crates but still agitated. He looked utterly bewildered, probably realizing Eleanor’s plans had gone spectacularly wrong.

“You clumsy fool!” Eleanor shrieked at Tommy, ignoring the scattered papers. She seemed more concerned with the mess than the potential implications of what had just spilled out. “Get those dogs back under control!”

She started to bend down, reaching for the scattered papers, but Kael let out a low, stern growl, stepping between her and the documents. He wasn’t aggressive, but his posture made it clear: *these stay*.

A surge of adrenaline coursed through me. The DNA test. What was that about? And why was Eleanor so desperate to hide it? This wasn’t just about the farm anymore. This was something deeper, something she had kept secret.

I knew this was my chance. The documents were exposed, Kael had the upper hand, and Eleanor was furious and distracted.

“Tommy!” I called out, my voice cutting through the tension. “Lock your truck doors. Call the sheriff.”

Tommy snapped out of his daze. He glanced at Eleanor, then back at me, then at the still-snarling pitbulls. He grabbed the crate latches, securing them with a decisive click. The sound echoed in the sudden, tense silence.

Eleanor spun around, her eyes wide with panic. She lunged for the documents again, but Kael was quicker, his body a silent barrier. He then nudged the spilled satchel closer to the porch with his nose.

My heart hammered against my ribs. What secrets were hidden in that bag? What else had Eleanor been trying to cover up? This was my opportunity to find out.
