Chapter 12: The Lingering Threat

The preliminary probate court hearing was scheduled for a humid Tuesday morning, a week after Eleanor’s brief arrest. I arrived at the courthouse in the neighboring county, my stomach a knot of nerves. Mr. Jenkins, my lawyer, met me at the entrance, his briefcase looking almost identical to Eleanor’s, but filled with truth instead of deceit.

“Deputy Hensley’s testimony and the evidence packet have been submitted,” Mr. Jenkins murmured as we walked down the polished hallway. “The judge is well aware of the public interest in this case.”

The courtroom smelled faintly of old paper and stale coffee. A few reporters were scattered amongst the public benches, their pens poised. Eleanor, however, was conspicuously absent. Her attorney, a younger, sharper-looking woman I didn’t recognize, sat alone at the defense table.

“Where is she?” I whispered to Mr. Jenkins.

He shook his head, a grim line to his lips. “No idea. Her lawyer claims she’s indisposed, but she hasn’t provided details.”

The judge, a stern-faced woman with an air of no-nonsense authority, called the case. She listened intently as Mr. Jenkins presented my evidence: the certified DNA paternity test, the forged deed, and the explosive letter from David Gable detailing Eleanor’s years of financial misconduct. He highlighted the viral social media exposure and the ongoing criminal investigation.

The defense attorney, looking uncomfortable, offered vague statements about Eleanor’s reputation and suggested this was a misunderstanding. She looked truly surprised when Mr. Jenkins introduced David Gable’s letter. Eleanor had clearly kept her legal team in the dark about its existence.

The judge, after reviewing the documents, pounded her gavel. “Given the severity of the criminal allegations, including felony forgery and potential obstruction of justice regarding a family trust, and the pending police investigation,” she declared, her voice resonating through the courtroom, “this court finds it necessary to freeze all assets belonging to the Gable family estate, effective immediately.”

A ripple went through the courtroom. “This freeze will remain in place pending the full resolution of the criminal investigation and a comprehensive probate review. Furthermore, I am issuing a warrant for the appearance of Eleanor Gable. Her failure to appear today is unacceptable, especially given the gravity of the charges.”

Eleanor’s attorney looked stunned, quickly huddling with a paralegal.

The judge then turned her gaze directly to me. “Ms. Oakwood, your daughter’s inheritance and the integrity of Gable Organic Farm are now protected under court order. No further asset transfers or sales can occur until this matter is resolved.”

Relief washed over me, a physical lightness in my chest. This was a massive victory. Eleanor couldn’t touch the farm, couldn’t sell anything off, couldn’t funnel funds away. She was cornered financially.

But a fresh wave of unease followed. Eleanor hadn’t appeared. Her whereabouts were unknown. Was she truly “indisposed,” or had she fled? The thought of her still at large, a vengeful phantom, chilled me.

As we left the courtroom, the reporters swarmed us. Mr. Jenkins handled them, giving a brief, professional statement about the asset freeze and the judge’s order.

“Where do you think she is?” I asked Mr. Jenkins quietly as we walked through the courthouse doors.

He shook his head. “Knowing Eleanor, she’s either plotting her next move from a safe distance, or she’s simply too proud to show her face. But the warrant means she won’t be able to hide forever. Her bank accounts are frozen, her assets locked down. She’s running out of options.”

Yet, the image of that empty chair in the courtroom, meant for Eleanor, lingered in my mind. A legal victory was one thing. A physical threat, still unseen and untethered, was another entirely. I had secured the farm’s future, but my personal safety, and Lily’s, still felt precarious.

The fight was far from over. Eleanor’s absence was not a surrender; it was simply a change of battlefield.
