Chapter 9: BAD: Perimeter Catch

#content-1

👉 Previous Decision: You chose Option B – Try to physically flee the building with the magnetic tapes under your coat.

The lashing rain plastered my suit to my body, blurring my vision as I burst out of the emergency exit. The master tapes, tucked precariously under my coat, felt like heavy stones against my chest. The storm raged around me, wind howling, lightning illuminating the stark, rain-slicked perimeter.

My plan was to reach my car, disappear into the chaos of the night. But Marcus had thought of everything.

A deep, guttural growl ripped through the downpour. Two shadows detached themselves from the darkness near the security gate. Attack dogs. German Shepherds, teeth bared, their hackles raised. They moved with terrifying speed, undeterred by the weather.

“Hold it right there!” a voice boomed through a megaphone, distorted by the wind and rain. “Put your hands up, Pendelton!”

I stumbled, my feet slipping on the wet asphalt. The dogs were upon me in an instant, snarling, their powerful bodies slamming into my legs. I cried out as one latched onto my arm, its teeth tearing through my coat sleeve. The tapes, dislodged by the impact, fell to the ground, scattering in the puddles.

Security lights flared on, bathing the scene in a harsh, unforgiving glow. Guards, their rifles trained on me, emerged from the shadows. Marcus Halstead himself stepped forward, a smirk on his face, a waterproof jacket pulled tight around him.

“Leaving so soon, Arthur?” he drawled, his voice carrying effortlessly despite the storm. “And with my… intellectual property?” He gestured to the scattered tapes.

One of the guards retrieved the water-damaged reels. Marcus picked one up, his thumb running over the label: “Project Nightingale.” He tossed it to the ground with contempt.

“Clever, but foolish,” Marcus said, shaking his head. “You really thought you could just walk away with AetherTech’s secrets?”

The dog handler pulled his snarling animals back, but the damage was done. My arm throbbed, blood mixing with the rainwater. My brief hope of escape, shattered. The rain felt cold, like the finality of capture.
