Chapter 9: The Storming Horizon

👉 Previous Decision: You tricked Evelyn Cross into delivering the decrypted bank records to federal auditors.

The sky outside AetherTech darkened, a bruise-purple swirling mass. A violent electrical storm was brewing, the kind that made the building hum with static electricity. Inside, the atmosphere was just as charged. Federal Agent Drew’s presence had cast a palpable pall over the corporate offices.

I held the master tapes from the vault, hidden in a reinforced pouch under my blazer. The time for subtlety was over. The storm was my cover, my catalyst. Dr. O’Reilly had mentioned how environmental factors, especially electromagnetic interference, could disrupt sensitive acoustic grids.

My plan was daring, almost reckless. I had to connect the master tapes to AetherTech’s central acoustic amplifier, the very system that broadcasted the memory-suppression frequencies. The lightning strike, if it hit the building’s power grid, could create a surge powerful enough to override the system’s safeguards. Instead of wiping memories, it would broadcast them.

I made my way back to Sub-Level 4, the constant low thrum of the facility now accompanied by the distant rumble of thunder. Rain began to lash against the reinforced windows, a drumming rhythm that matched the frantic beat of my heart.

The central amplifier room was a labyrinth of wires, dials, and flashing lights. It was usually under lock and key, but the storm seemed to have caused a minor power fluctuation, leaving the main console slightly ajar. Luck, or perhaps fate, was on my side.

I had to be quick. A security guard was doing his rounds every ten minutes. I pulled out my tools, a set of modified audio jacks and a small, magnetic bypass chip. My fingers worked with practiced precision, connecting the output of the master tape player to the primary acoustic broadcast array.

A particularly violent clap of thunder shook the entire building, making the lights flicker. My heart jumped. The power grid was unstable. This was it.

I looked at the master tapes, the silent recordings of Marcus’s betrayal. If this worked, the entire facility would hear his orders, his methods, his proof. It was a high-risk gamble. One wrong move, one missed frequency, and I would be lost. But the thought of Marcus’s smug face, of Evelyn’s unwitting complicity, spurred me on. I had to expose him.
