The vault sealed shut, plunging the chamber into near darkness. A low, mocking chuckle echoed from above.
Then, a massive monitor screen flickered to life on the far wall. Marcus’s face appeared, larger than life, his expression a mixture of disappointment and a chilling, predatory calm.
“Julian,” he said, his voice resonating through unseen speakers, “my dear, foolish brother. So predictable.”
He sighed, a theatrical gesture. “I offered you a gilded cage, remember? A life of quiet comfort. You chose this. Such a waste of potential. Such a wasted mind.”
I gripped the crowbar, my knuckles white. “You’re a monster, Marcus. A trafficker of souls.”
He merely chuckled again. “Just a businessman, Julian. Adapting ancient resources for modern markets. You simply lack the vision.”
His gaze sharpened, locking onto mine. “No matter. You’ve made your choice. And now, I’ll make mine.”
Marcus pressed a button on a control panel off-screen. The altar glowed with a malevolent, reddish light. The sound of a high-pitched whine filled the chamber, growing more intense, more invasive.
“This isn’t about killing you, Julian,” Marcus said, his voice cold and detached. “That would be crude. And you’re far too valuable.”
The high-pitched whine became a searing pain behind my eyes, pushing against the inside of my skull. My vision blurred.
“This is about re-engineering,” Marcus stated, a cruel smile forming on his lips. “A total severance. A clean slate. You’ll be useful again. Just… not as Julian Kincaid.”
The pain intensified, a blinding white-hot agony that consumed everything. My grip on the crowbar loosened. My knees buckled.
I screamed, but no sound came out. The eldritch energy of the altar surged, ripping through the delicate fabric of my mind, tearing away decades of memories, experiences, and identity.
A blinding flash. Then, darkness.
***
Weeks later, Julian Kincaid, the software archivist, was no more. A new man, quietly efficient and with no past to speak of, arrived in Zurich under a meticulously crafted new identity. He took an administrative post in a discreet overseas branch of Aetheris Technologies.
He lived a pleasant, quiet life in a small apartment overlooking the snow-capped mountains, drinking herbal tea and tending to his small collection of succulents. He had no memory of a brother, a family, or the gaping, soul-devouring entity beneath a corporate tower. He remembered only his tasks, his routines, and a placid, unburdened existence.
