Chapter 13: Five Years Later

The ambulance siren wailed, a mournful, insistent cry that tore through the night. I sat beside Maya on the gurney, her small, lifeless hand clasped tightly in mine. Paramedics worked furiously around us, their movements quick and practiced, but the frantic beeps of the monitors offered no comfort. Her chest remained still.

“We have no pulse,” one of them announced, his voice grim.

“Starting chest compressions,” another replied, immediately beginning rhythmic pumps on Maya’s fragile chest.

The ambulance was a blur of flashing lights and shouted medical jargon as we sped towards St. Jude’s Hospital. I could only stare at Maya’s face, so peaceful yet so utterly still. My mind screamed at the unfairness, at Mark’s cruelty, at the rapid, brutal escalation that had led to this moment.

At the hospital, the emergency room was a sterile, unforgiving expanse. Maya was rushed into a trauma bay, a flurry of white coats and urgent voices. I was left in the waiting room, a cold, empty space. Julian arrived moments later, his face etched with terror.

“Where is she?” he demanded, his voice hoarse.

“They took her back,” I whispered, unable to articulate more. My world had narrowed to the sterile walls, the anxious faces around me, and the agonizing silence from behind the closed doors.

Mark eventually appeared, his clothes disheveled, his face pale and clammy. He stood motionless in the waiting room corner, his eyes fixed on nothing, a man utterly lost. He made no move towards me, no attempt to speak to Julian. The weight of his actions, the sight of Maya collapsing, seemed to have finally broken through his self-absorption. He looked like a ghost.

Ninety minutes passed, each second an eternity. Doctors and nurses moved in and out of the trauma bay. Hope dwindled with every passing minute, replaced by a crushing dread. I held my breath with every swing of the double doors.

Finally, a doctor with kind, tired eyes approached us. He spoke softly, but his words cut through me like a knife.

“We did everything we could,” he began, his voice heavy with regret. “Despite advanced life support efforts, her heart simply couldn’t recover from the severe arrhythmia.”

He paused, a sympathetic glance at my tear-streaked face. “I’m so sorry, Mrs. Bennet. Your daughter, Maya, passed away at 8:47 PM.”

The world went silent. The sounds of the emergency room faded. The words echoed, then shattered into a million pieces. Seventeen-year-old Maya was gone. Stress-induced cardiac arrest. My precious, fragile daughter, gone because of her father’s rage and selfishness.

I felt Julian’s arm around me, holding me upright as my knees buckled. My eyes found Mark in the corner, still standing like a statue. He had killed his own daughter with his cruelty. The emptiness that had just opened up inside me was vast, consuming, and absolute.
