Chapter 13: Five Years Later

The tension in the living room was a suffocating blanket. Mark stood, his voice escalating, waving the legal injunctions he’d brought. His face was contorted, a mix of anger and self-righteousness.

“You have no idea the trouble you’re causing,” he spat, gesturing wildly with the papers. “This is my company. My reputation. Your reckless behavior could cost me everything!”

I stood across from him, my body rigid, refusing to give an inch. The threat against Maya’s insurance still echoed in my ears. How could I sign away everything, knowing he’d already stolen from her? How could I refuse, and risk her life?

“Your reputation?” I finally managed, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. “You stole from your own daughter, Mark! You called her a burden!”

His eyes narrowed, a flicker of something, perhaps fear, crossing his face. He hadn’t expected me to know that.

“What are you talking about?” he blustered, trying to regain control. “Those are baseless accusations!”

“Baseless?” I echoed, a bitter laugh escaping me. “Julian has every single forum post, Mark. Every single bank transfer from Maya’s trust fund. The notary’s ledger proving your fraud with the house. We know everything.”

His face paled, the bravado draining out of him. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He was finally seeing the full scope of what I knew, what Julian had uncovered.

Just then, Maya shuffled into the living room, drawn by the raised voices. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with fear, reflecting the terror of our escalating confrontation. She had her small, worn teddy bear clutched in one hand.

“Mom? Dad?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “Please stop fighting.”

Mark turned to her, his expression twisting from shock to renewed anger, feeling exposed. “Maya, go back to your room! This doesn’t concern you!”

“It concerns her more than anyone!” I cried, stepping forward, trying to shield her with my body.

The sudden shift in focus, the raw hostility in Mark’s voice, was too much. Maya stumbled, her small hand flying to her chest. Her breath hitched, a sharp, gasping sound.

“Maya?” I gasped, reaching for her.

Her eyes rolled back. She swayed, her knees buckling. The teddy bear slipped from her grasp and hit the hardwood floor with a soft thud.

Then, with a sickening thud, Maya collapsed. Her body hit the floor, motionless. Her breathing stopped instantly. The terrible silence that followed was broken only by the frantic beat of my own heart.

I dropped to my knees, cradling her head. “Maya! Maya, no!”

Mark stood frozen, the injunction papers still clutched in his hand, his mouth agape. The shock of what had just happened turned his face to stone. He had pushed too far. The shouting, the threats, the emotional violence—it had physically broken her. I felt for her pulse, but found nothing. My fingers trembled against her cold skin.

“Call 911!” I screamed, my voice ripped from the depths of my soul, tears blinding me. “Someone, call 911!”
