Chapter 12: Silent Sunlight

Inspector Kellerman, now driven by an urgent, almost desperate need for answers, directed his team to the concrete-encased Volvo. The public’s demand for transparency was absolute; there was no turning back now.

“We need to get to the bottom of this,” he announced, his voice carrying over the murmuring crowd. “The GPR readings from the Hallowells’ porch, combined with the batch ledger information, indicate a highly unusual use of materials.”

He pointed to the rear chassis of Julian’s Volvo, which was still mostly visible under the hardened concrete. “We’ll start there. Focus on opening a section of the concrete base to examine the vehicle’s contents.”

A wave of murmurs swept through the crowd. Opening the car? What could possibly be inside?

One of Kellerman’s assistants, a burly man with a diamond-tipped hydraulic cutter, began to work. The air filled with the high-pitched whine of the saw, the acrid smell of burning concrete, and a cloud of gray dust.

Richard Hallowell remained on his porch, a statue of quiet despair. Victoria had retreated inside, the curtains on their mansion’s front windows now drawn tight.

Slowly, painstakingly, a section of the concrete base was cut away. The thick, vault-grade sealant resisted, sparks flying as the cutter bit deeper. After several tense minutes, a rectangular piece of concrete was carefully pried loose.

The cavity revealed beneath was not what anyone expected.

Instead of rusted parts of Julian’s vintage Volvo, or even the expected floorboards, there was a custom-fitted, reinforced cavity built directly into the undercarriage of the vehicle. It looked less like a car and more like a safe.

And nestled inside this concealed space were several waterproof metallic cases. They glinted dully in the sunlight, reflecting the shocked faces of the onlookers.

The chatter intensified. Reporters strained to get a better view. Lily, sensing the gravity of the moment, pressed herself against my leg, her gaze fixed on the gleaming cases.

Kellerman knelt, his expression grim. He reached into the dusty cavity and carefully pulled out one of the cases. It was heavy, surprisingly so.

“These aren’t car parts,” he stated, his voice hushed. “These are secure storage containers.”

He exchanged a look with one of his senior assistants. The atmosphere was thick with tension. Every person present knew this was no longer about a property dispute or a concrete-covered car.

This was about something much, much bigger. Something Julian had hidden.

The assistant handed Kellerman a crowbar. With a deep breath, the inspector carefully inserted the tool into the seal of the first case.

A collective gasp went through the crowd as he pried it open. Inside, nestled among layers of protective foam, were stacks of meticulously bound paper. Not just any paper.

These were financial documents. Bearer bonds. Untraceable. And there were a lot of them.

Kellerman picked up a ledger, his eyes scanning the precise handwriting. His face, already pale from the earlier slip of the tongue, now drained of all color.

“These are offshore ledger bonds,” he whispered, the microphone still catching every word. “Millions. And… this signature…”

He looked up at me, then at Richard Hallowell on his porch, a profound sorrow etched onto his face.

“This is Julian Montgomery’s signature.”
