Chapter 12: The Rebuilt Wing

The emergency court hearing had dissolved the syndicate’s buyout contract like smoke. The grand scheme, Greg’s desperate escape route, was crumbling around him. The air in the clinic felt heavy, charged with unspoken truths.

Greg found Arthur in the deserted hallway outside the old hospice wing, a place Arthur often visited after his wife’s passing. The lights here were dimmed, creating long, shifting shadows that danced with the fading afternoon light. The silence pressed in, broken only by the distant hum of the building’s ancient ventilation system.

Greg clutched a crumpled printout in his hand—the now-worthless syndicate terms. His face was etched with a frantic desperation Arthur hadn’t seen since their confrontation in the staff lounge. Major, sensing the tension, stood protectively by Arthur’s side, a low rumble stirring in his chest.

“Arthur,” Greg began, his voice hoarse, a barely controlled tremor beneath the words. “Please, we need to talk. Before you do anything rash.”

Arthur simply folded his arms, his expression unyielding. “I’m not doing anything rash, Greg. I’m investigating a serious breach of safety protocols that almost killed my staff and patients.”

“But the reports,” Greg pleaded, gesturing wildly with the crumpled papers. “If you release the full safety audit findings to the state licensing board… my career will be over. I’ll lose everything.”

He took a step closer, his eyes wide and panicked. “I won’t just be broke, Arthur. I’ll be unemployable. Lily… what about Lily?”

The name hung in the air, a silent plea. Greg was exposed, vulnerable, and terrified. He was no longer trying to hide his motives; he was laying them bare.

“Your concern for Lily should have led you to ensure safety, not bypass it,” Arthur retorted, his voice calm, but firm. “My concern for this clinic, for every patient, demands full transparency.”

“Please,” Greg whispered, his eyes darting around the empty corridor as if expecting someone to materialize. “Just tell me what you want. We can settle this informally. A private agreement. I can pay you back for the clinic’s repairs. Any amount.”

Arthur shook his head slowly. “It’s not about money, Greg. It’s about accountability. About the truth. And it’s about the safety of this hospital.”

He stepped forward, his gaze locking with Greg’s. “I want a full written statement, Greg. A detailed, signed confession acknowledging the falsified safety checks, identifying Higgins, and outlining every step you took in authorizing that waiver.”

Greg recoiled, his face paling further. “A confession? Arthur, you can’t be serious. That’s… that’s career suicide.”

“It’s the only way,” Arthur insisted. “The only path to even beginning to make this right. Your choice, Greg. Ruin your career now, or face worse consequences later. And jeopardize the lives of people who depend on this clinic.”

The silence stretched, thick with Greg’s internal battle. He was cornered, his options dwindling, the weight of his desperate choices pressing down on him in the dim, echoing hallway.
