Chapter 1: The Starlight Scandal

#content-1

Part 1

**My ex-husband’s young girlfriend called me “past my prime” at a glitzy gala — then a little girl revealed she was my stolen daughter.**

The glitzy charity gala was supposed to be a chance for me, Adeline Monroe, to reconnect with old Hollywood friends.

Instead, I found my ex-husband, Derek Shaw, draped over his much younger girlfriend, Seraphina Beaumont, at the champagne fountain.

They smirked, whispering loud enough for me to hear about how I was “past my prime,” trying to provoke a reaction.

I just stood there, my heart aching.

A small, curious girl with pigtails darted up, tugging my dress.

“Mommy!” she exclaimed, holding up a faded hospital photo.

Seraphina’s carefully constructed smile vanished, her face draining of color.

My breath hitched. The girl, Chloe, pushed the photo closer. It was undeniable: me, much younger, cradling a newborn.

Seraphina, frozen for a beat, snatched the image from Chloe’s hand. Her eyes, wide and venomous, locked onto mine.

“What is the meaning of this, Adeline?” Seraphina’s voice, usually a sugary lilt for her followers, was now a dangerous hiss. “Are you truly so desperate for attention?”

Derek Shaw, who had been laughing moments before, stepped forward, his arm tightening around Seraphina. His eyes scanned the curious faces turning our way.

“Adeline, darling,” he said, his tone oozing false concern. “You’re embarrassing yourself. And Seraphina.”

Chloe looked confused, then her lower lip began to tremble. Seraphina’s gaze darted to the buzzing phones in the crowd, then back to me, a calculated fire in her eyes.

“You’re unhinged,” she declared, loud enough for a dozen camera phones to catch. “You’ve been stalking me for months, trying to invent some deranged connection.”

A gasp rippled through the onlookers. Derek pulled out his own phone, already tapping furiously.

“This woman,” Seraphina continued, her voice rising to a dramatic quiver, “is a menace.”

“I have DMs, screenshots… proof of her harassment.”

She turned to the crowd, her face morphing into that of a terrified victim.

“She even threatened to expose a ‘dark secret’ from my past.”

“All because I wouldn’t let her latch onto my success!”

My mind reeled. Stalking? Harassment? The accusations were a physical blow, each word twisting the knife of revelation deeper.

“Seraphina, you are my daughter,” I whispered, barely audible, tears blurring my vision. “That photo, Chloe… she knows. How could you deny her?”

But Seraphina simply shook her head, a tear tracing a path down her cheek for the cameras.

“She’s lost it, Derek,” she sobbed, burying her face in his shoulder. “This is exactly what I warned you about.”

Before I could formulate a coherent thought, my phone buzzed with an alert. Then another. And another.

Derek must have moved fast. My social media feed was exploding. Trending.

A flood of furious comments, accusations, and fabricated screenshots filled my screen. #AdelineMonroeIsAStalker. #LeaveSeraphinaAlone.

My name, my reputation, my entire world was being systematically destroyed, sentence by fabricated sentence.

I watched the digital fire consume me, knowing I’d been utterly outmaneuvered.

Part 2

The days after the gala were a blur of online condemnation. My phone became a hostile portal.

Friends went silent. Seraphina’s PR firm sent aggressive legal threats, solidifying the public’s narrative of my instability.

I retreated to my archival studio, my sanctuary.

I pulled out old journals and faded photos, anything from the time I lost my daughter.

Memories surfaced. The terror of the hospital, the nurses avoiding my gaze.

The official story was a reluctant adoption I’d instantly regretted. But details were always hazy.

Derek had been too supportive then, too efficient, cutting off my attempts to find the child.

I remembered him mentioning a small, respectable adoption agency. He’d made a large donation to their charity gala, weeks after the adoption.

This niggled at me. Derek, who hoarded every penny, making such a donation?

It didn’t fit. I remembered him being strangely calm, almost pleased with himself.

My fingers flew, cross-referencing the agency with local charities. “Hope’s Haven for Children” appeared.

Their archived annual report listed Derek Shaw, studio head, as a top benefactor.

I dug deeper, finding a cached version with “special projects.” A line item: “Undisclosed Philanthropic Endeavors – D.S.”

D.S. Derek Shaw. It couldn’t be a coincidence. The sum was enormous.

What if he hadn’t just *allowed* the adoption? What if he had actively engineered it?

He knew my deepest longing was for a child. This was about more than avoiding scandal for his image.

This was about calculated cruelty, ensuring I would never trace my own child.

I searched for related financial records, sifting through obscure public filings for hours.

Then I found it: a digitalized copy of an old, internal ledger for Hope’s Haven, marked “CONFIDENTIAL.”

The entries were cryptic, mostly coded.

One entry, weeks after my daughter’s birth, caught my eye. It listed “Services Rendered: expedited placement, full confidentiality clause invoked.”

Under “Recipient,” were initials. And then, a small, almost invisible symbol, like a stylized film reel.

Below that, a separate line: “Special consideration for continued ‘support’ from D.S.”

The numbers next to it were astronomical. This wasn’t a favor. This was a payment.

It was a transaction for my daughter. I stared at the screen, a cold dread seeping into my bones.

This wasn’t about scandal. This was about power.

This was about Derek ensuring I would never, ever trace my own child.
