The chapel was a cacophony of hushed conversations and angry whispers. Gideon’s triumphant laughter echoed in my ears, a chilling counterpoint to the scent of burnt paper still hanging in the air. Tabitha, her face set in a mask of rigid piety, clung to Jonathan Silas, as if he were her only anchor in a storm she herself had created.

I looked at Caleb. His shoulders were slumped, his eyes vacant, fixed on the smoldering embers in the brazier where Mother’s letter had been. He had risked everything, only to witness our sister choose her chains.

Realizing Tabitha could not be saved, not now, not like this, I knew we had to leave. Immediately. Gideon’s security elders, previously hesitant, were beginning to stir, their eyes now clearly hostile.

I gripped Caleb’s arm, my fingers digging into his sleeve. “Come on,” I whispered, pulling him gently but firmly. “We’re leaving.”

He didn’t resist. He simply followed, his steps heavy. I guided him quickly down the aisle, past the gawking congregants, past the bewildered pastor. Every face was a judgment, a condemnation.

As we reached the chapel doors, Gideon appeared, blocking the entrance for a brief, terrifying moment. His face was a thundercloud, but his eyes held a strange, triumphant glint.

“You will burn, Maya!” he shouted, his voice echoing through the chapel, chasing us. “You will burn in eternity for your insolence! For tearing down God’s chosen order!”

He knew the state financial audit would haunt him for years, a slow, bureaucratic grind that would chip away at his ill-gotten gains. He knew his authority, though intact within the compound walls, was shattered in the outside world. But he also knew he had retained the ultimate prize: the mind of his daughter, Tabitha.

I didn’t look back. I pulled Caleb through the doors, into the cool Idaho air. The bright sunlight felt alien after the oppressive gloom of the chapel. We hurried across the dusty compound yard, towards my rental car.

I unlocked the doors, practically shoving Caleb into the passenger seat. He buckled himself in, silent, his gaze still distant. I slid into the driver’s seat, starting the engine with a roar that felt like defiance.

As I pulled out of the compound, the chapel shrinking in my rearview mirror, I saw Gideon standing framed in its doorway, a lone, dark figure silhouetted against the setting sun. His last shouts were lost to the wind.

I drove away from Boundary County, leaving behind the only family I had ever truly known. My sister, my childhood, the ghosts of my past—all left in the dust. Only Caleb remained, a quiet, broken shadow beside me.
