Chapter 11: Nine Days Later

I broke the red wax seal on the envelope, the sound crisp in the stunned silence. Inside were not just papers, but a stack of certified bank statements. Each sheet bore the official watermark of the State of Idaho.

“You claim my mother’s letter is a lie,” I said, my voice cutting through the tension. I held up the first sheet. “But her words match these records exactly.”

I pointed to a specific line on the statement. “Here, dated November 3rd, 2011. A transfer of eighty-five thousand dollars from Lydia Gable’s private savings account.”

My finger moved to the next line. “Recipient: Gideon Gable, account number ending in 7132.”

A low gasp went through the pews. Ephraim Silas, who had been standing stiffly beside Gideon, suddenly took a quiet step backward, his face paling even further.

“This isn’t for compound improvements,” I continued, my voice gaining strength. “This isn’t for charity.”

I flipped to another page. “Here’s another. December 15th, 2011. One hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars. Same source, same recipient.”

The weight of the financial deception pressed down on Gideon. The specific numbers, the dates, the clear paper trail. My mother’s letter, once an accusation, was now irrefutable evidence.

“And here,” I said, my voice unwavering, holding up a third sheet, “the final one. February 1st, 2012. One hundred thousand dollars, transferred not to an Idaho account, but to an offshore holding in Panama.”

The destination of the funds hit like a thunderclap. Panama. A place associated with hidden wealth, with illicit dealings. The congregation looked from me to Gideon, their faces etched with shock and betrayal.

Ephraim Silas, the corrupt notary, used the collective distraction as his opportunity. He began to back away slowly, stealthily, towards the rear chapel exit. His eyes darted around, searching for an escape.

Several senior church members, men who had served under Gideon for decades, rose from their seats. Their faces were grim, their expressions no longer deferential.

“Elder Gideon,” one of them, Brother Samuel, spoke, his voice heavy with disappointment. “This… this demands an immediate accounting.”

Another elder stepped forward. “Panama? What dealings could necessitate such a transfer, Elder?”

Gideon stood frozen, his face a mask of disbelief and rage. His carefully constructed empire of lies was crumbling around him, brick by brick. The moral authority he had wielded for so long had shattered into a thousand pieces.

His eyes darted to Ephraim, who was now nearly at the door, making a desperate run for it. But it was too late. The dam had broken.
