Chapter 11: Nine Days Later

Elder Gideon Gable let out a roar, a guttural sound of pure, unadulterated rage that ripped through the chapel. His face, crimson and contorted, looked nothing like the calm, serene leader they all knew.

“Blasphemy!” he shrieked, lunging forward with shocking speed. He tried to rip the letter from Caleb’s grasp, his fingers clawing at the fragile paper.

Caleb, quick for his age, stumbled back, protecting the letter. “No! This is Mother’s truth!”

Gideon snarled, his eyes alight with fury. “You are a lying vessel of corruption, Caleb! Possessed by the secular devils of your sister’s making!”

He spun towards the security elders, his voice booming with absolute authority. “Seize him! Seize this traitorous boy! Lock him in the ministry barn until the county sheriff can be notified of his heinous crime!”

Three burly deacons, their faces pale with shock but still beholden to their elder’s command, moved forward. Their eyes were fixed on Caleb, their movements slow and heavy. They were men of faith, not enforcers, but Gideon’s word was law.

I stepped immediately between Caleb and the approaching deacons, my body forming a shield. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my voice was steady.

“Touch him,” I warned, looking directly at the lead deacon, a man named Brother Thomas, who had known me since I was a child. “And I promise, you will regret it.”

Thomas hesitated, his gaze shifting from Gideon’s enraged face to my unyielding one.

“He is a danger to this fellowship!” Gideon screamed, his voice hoarse. “He has slandered his father, defied the Lord!”

“He speaks the truth,” I retorted, my hand going into the briefcase I had placed on a nearby bench. My fingers closed around a thick, sealed envelope.

I pulled it out, its official state emblem stark against the chapel’s soft lighting. It wasn’t a sermon; it was a subpoena.

“There are other truths, Father,” I stated, holding the envelope aloft. “Truths that no forged letter or coerced witness can erase.”

Gideon froze, his eyes fixed on the official seal. The deacons, too, halted, looking at the envelope with a sudden, dawning fear. It was clear this wasn’t just a family quarrel anymore. The secular world had infiltrated the sacred space.
