Chapter 11: Nine Days Later

The flicker in Tabitha’s eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, hard resolve. Her hand shot out, not to take my offer, but to snatch our mother’s letter from Caleb’s grasp.

Before anyone could react, she spun, her white wedding dress swirling around her. She strode to the brass brazier at the foot of the altar, where a small fire burned, meant for ceremonial blessings.

With a choked sob of fury, she threw the letter directly into the flames.

Orange fire licked at the yellowed paper, consuming Lydia’s words, turning truth into ash. The smell of burning paper filled the chapel, a bitter, final scent.

“You call this truth?” Tabitha screamed, her voice shrill with rage, her eyes blazing at me. “You call this freedom? This is poison! Secular poison from the outside world, meant to destroy my holy day!”

Her face was twisted, unrecognizable. My heart shattered into a million pieces. The image of the burning letter, her violent rejection, would haunt me forever.

“You are a tool of corruption, Maya!” she shrieked, tears now streaming down her face. “And you, Caleb, a pawn of deceit! You have defiled this sacred space with your lies!”

Gideon, who had been stunned into silence by her outburst, now watched with a grim, satisfied smirk. Jonathan Silas, who had remained stoic, let out a slow, triumphant breath.

“I demand this ceremony proceed!” Tabitha declared, turning to the pastor, her voice raw with conviction. “Now! Let the Lord unite us as He intended!”

She grabbed Jonathan’s hand, her grip surprisingly strong. The pastor, bewildered and shaken, fumbled with his Bible, trying to regain control of the ceremony.

With a defiant glare at me, Tabitha took the feathered quill offered by a trembling deacon. She leaned over the altar, her head held high, and with a flourish, she signed the marriage covenant. Her signature was firm, unwavering. She had made her choice. She had willingly chosen the cult’s hierarchy, its abusive promises, over truth and freedom.

I watched her, a hollow ache in my chest. My sister, lost. Lost to brainwashing, to fear, to a cage she now embraced as her sanctuary.

Gideon’s eyes met mine across the chapel. A cruel, knowing laugh escaped his lips. He knew I had exposed his embezzlement, his lies, his depravity. He knew the state audit would follow, that his reputation outside the compound was in tatters.

But he also knew he had won. He had permanently retained control over Tabitha, over her mind, her choices, her life. And his $2.4 million compound, his empire, remained intact within the impenetrable walls of his sect. He had lost a battle, but secured his most valuable pawn.
