David’s hand remained pressed against Arthur’s chest, a physical barrier between my father and me. Arthur, still breathless, braced himself against the doorframe, his gaze unwavering, fixed on David.

“You are not taking her anywhere,” David snarled, his voice rising. “She’s my wife. You’re trespassing on private property, old man. I will call the police.”

Behind David, Evelyn rushed into the hallway, her face contorted with panic.

“Arthur, you are ruining your daughter’s life!” she shrieked, her voice shrill. “Clara belongs with her husband! This is completely unacceptable interference!”

Uncle Richard and Aunt Martha hovered in the dining room archway, frozen, unsure how to intervene. The polite luncheon had exploded into chaos.

Arthur stepped firmly onto the threshold, pushing David’s hand off his chest with surprising force. His body, though slight, seemed to gain strength from sheer will. He grabbed my arm, pulling me protectively behind his shoulder.

“She’s coming with me,” Arthur rasped, his eyes blazing. “You lay another hand on her, David, and you’ll regret it for the rest of your miserable life.”

The shouting reached a deafening peak. Inside the hallway, Sarah had finally found her voice.

“Someone call an ambulance!” she cried, her voice piercing the din.

Uncle Richard, meanwhile, was fumbling for his own phone. “I’ll call the cops!” he boomed, looking at David. “This is assault!”

The two arguments crashed into each other, a cacophony of fear and rage.

Arthur, mid-sentence, suddenly stopped speaking. His head snapped back, a jolt running through his body. His grip on my hand, which had been a protective hold, now tightened with crushing, desperate force. His knuckles turned white. His eyes, fixed on some unseen point beyond David’s shoulder, widened in sudden, profound alarm.

A guttural sound escaped his throat, a sound of pure agony.
