David’s grip on Sarah’s shoulder tightened, his knuckles white. His face was distorted with rage, eyes flashing between Sarah, me, and the door that now vibrated with Arthur’s furious blows.

“Let go of her,” I said, my voice steady despite the tremor in my chest. I didn’t wait for him to respond.

I strode past David, my eyes fixed on the front door. My hand found the deadbolt. With a decisive click, I unlocked it. The heavy wooden door swung wide open to the crisp autumn air.

Arthur stood on the porch, his shoulders hunched, his face flushed a vivid red. His breathing was heavy and ragged, each inhale a struggle after climbing the steps. But his eyes, though strained, were fixed entirely on my exposed neck, on the undeniable marks David had left.

In his hand, he clutched a small navy suitcase. It was mine, a familiar piece of luggage I had packed during a secret visit to his house two weeks earlier, a contingency plan.

“Get your coat, Clara,” Arthur said, his voice hoarse with fury, trembling with effort. “You’re never setting foot in this house again.”

His gaze finally flickered to David, standing just behind me in the doorway. The silent fury in his eyes was palpable.

David, recovering his footing, stepped fully into the doorway, blocking the exit. His face was a mask of furious determination. He raised his hand, placing it flat against Arthur’s chest.

“You’re trespassing,” David snarled, his voice low and menacing. “Get off my property.”

He pushed, trying to physically shove my elderly father back down the porch steps. Arthur stumbled back a single step, but then his feet planted firmly, refusing to yield. The suitcase slipped from his hand, thudding softly onto the porch floor between them.
