Chapter 13: Solitude in the Quiet House

The low rumble of Arthur’s truck cut through the artificial cheer of the dining room like a knife. David, glass of wine still in hand, walked toward the front window, drawn by the sound.

His casual smile evaporated. His face hardened instantly as he spotted the familiar red Ford F-150 pulling up to the curb, its chrome bumper glinting in the autumn sunlight.

“What is he doing here?” David muttered, his voice low and dangerous.

Evelyn, sensing the shift in mood, stood up from the table, her chair scraping loudly across the polished floor. Her lips thinned into a furious line.

“Clara,” she hissed, turning her gaze directly on me. “How dare you invite your ill-tempered father to a private family luncheon? This is completely inappropriate.”

Uncle Richard, who had been listening with a scowl, pushed himself to his feet as well. His heavy frame seemed to fill the room.

“Arthur has no place interfering in David and Clara’s marital real estate decisions,” he asserted, his voice booming with authority. “This is family business. Our business.”

He looked at me, his eyes full of accusation. Aunt Martha wrung her hands, looking from Evelyn to me, her usual worried expression deepening into outright panic.

I remained completely still at the head of the table. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. I met Evelyn’s furious gaze, then Uncle Richard’s. I refused to apologize, refused to offer an excuse. My silence was not weakness now; it was defiance.

David, his face a mask of furious control, marched to the front door. He reached for the deadbolt, his movements swift and angry.

With a sharp, metallic snap, the bolt slid home. The sound echoed through the house, sealing us all inside. Arthur hadn’t even reached the porch steps. David had just locked him out.
