The tension at the dining table felt like a physical weight, pressing down on every forkful of roasted chicken. I pushed my plate forward, barely touching the food.

“I should go check on the roast,” I announced, pushing back my chair. “It might be getting dry.”

It was a flimsy excuse, but it bought me a moment away from their scrutinizing gazes. As I stood, Sarah quickly pushed her own chair back.

“I’ll help you,” she offered, her voice quiet.

Her offer was met with a sharp look from Evelyn. “Sarah, your mother is speaking.”

But Sarah was already following me into the kitchen, a stack of clean plates clutched in her hands. The kitchen felt like a different world, the sounds of polite, strained conversation from the dining room muffled by the swinging door.

Sarah set the plates down on the counter with a soft clatter. She turned to me, her brow furrowed with concern.

“Clara,” she whispered, her voice low and urgent. “Why are you making this so hard? Just sign the paper.”

She wrung her hands. “Mom’s in real trouble. She’s facing immediate foreclosure on her apartment if she can’t come up with the equity from your cottage.”

A cold knot formed in my stomach. So that was Evelyn’s latest fabrication.

I turned to Sarah, looking her dead in the eye. “Do you know where Evelyn’s debt actually came from, Sarah?” I asked, my voice flat. “Do you really know?”

Sarah blinked, confused. “What are you talking about? Mom said… she said you had some expensive tastes, and the renovations you tried to do on the cottage ran way over budget.”

She paused, then lowered her voice further. “She said you spent all the money on luxury goods and failed home renovations. That you emptied their accounts.”

The lie was so ingrained, so perfectly crafted. They had blamed me for everything.

I pulled out my phone. My fingers, still trembling slightly, navigated to my banking app. I held the screen toward Sarah, her face illuminated by the pale blue light.

“David lost sixty thousand dollars in bad stock trades last winter,” I stated, my voice devoid of emotion. “Not me. He did.”

I scrolled through the transactions, pointing to specific entries. “See? Three direct transfers from our joint savings account. All into David’s personal trading account. Without my knowledge.”

The dates and amounts were undeniable, stark figures on the screen. Sarah’s eyes widened, tracing the rows of transactions. She looked up at me, her face pale, a silent horror growing in her expression. The narrative she’d been fed for months, for years, began to crumble around her. She had been completely mistaken.
