Chapter 10: Unearthing Old Secrets

#content-1

Brenda Chen was precisely the journalist I hoped she would be. My anonymous tip, carefully crafted to be intriguing but unidentifiable, clearly resonated with her.

A week later, Brenda’s article hit the internet. The headline was cautious but compelling: “Whispers of Power and Payoffs: Billionaire’s History of Aggression Comes Under Scrutiny.”

I scanned the piece, my heart pounding. She hadn’t named Reggie directly, but the description was unmistakable. She outlined a series of alarming past incidents, dating back years, involving a “prominent New York philanthropist.”

The article detailed how each incident – a destroyed restaurant, a violent confrontation at a private club, an assault on a former employee – had been meticulously buried under extensive, ironclad NDAs and multi-million dollar payouts. She cited anonymous sources who spoke of “erratic behavior” and “unpredictable temper.”

“Seven-figure payouts,” Maria breathed, reading over my shoulder. “He’s been doing this for a long time.”

Brenda’s report had confirmed Reggie’s pattern of aggression and cover-ups. She had unearthed a damning history, painting a clear picture of a man who used his wealth to erase his mistakes. But the article ended with a caveat: “While the pattern of behavior is clear, a definitive link to a medical condition cannot be confirmed without verifiable medical records or a named source.”

It was a powerful blow, but not the final one. Reggie was exposed, but not yet defeated.
