The sun rose, painting the eastern sky in shades of bruised purple and grey. It seemed to reflect the mood in New Gilead. News of Eli’s swift, unannounced changes had spread like wildfire, compounding the confusion from the previous night’s banquet.

I watched from my father’s study window as Eli emerged from our shared quarters, his head bowed slightly. Dark circles smudged beneath his eyes, stark against his sallow skin. He looked like a man who hadn’t slept, or who had fought a silent, losing battle.

He walked to the central meeting place where the congregants had already gathered, drawn by the urgent summons. His robes, usually pristine, seemed to hang loosely on his frame.

He mounted the familiar dais, the same one where he had celebrated his “ascension” just hours before. The air was thick with anticipation. Everyone expected an explanation for the chaos, a rallying cry, a reassertion of his authority.

Eli cleared his throat. His voice, when it came, was flat, devoid of its usual bluster.

“Brothers and Sisters of New Gilead,” he began, his gaze sweeping over the crowd but meeting no one’s eyes. “I stand before you today with a message of renewed humility and spiritual focus.”

The congregants murmured, exchanging confused glances.

“After a night of prayer and profound reflection,” Eli continued, his voice monotone, “I have come to a new understanding of our Founder’s true vision. Elder Josiah’s wisdom, as enshrined in the Founder’s Trust, must remain our guiding light.”

He paused, then delivered the blows, each one echoing the words I had dictated to him in the silence of the study.

“Therefore, I announce today that all proposed external timber sales, particularly concerning our Sacred Sentinel Woods, are permanently canceled. Our natural boundaries, our heritage, will remain untouched.”

A ripple of surprise went through the crowd. Many had been excited by the promise of new wealth.

“Furthermore,” Eli stated, his voice unchanging, “all significant financial authority, particularly regarding communal tithes and the management of New Gilead’s assets, will continue to be anchored exclusively in the Founder’s Trust. This trust will remain under the direct and vigilant oversight of its designated Trustee.”

He did not name me, but everyone knew who the Trustee was. He avoided looking in my direction.

“It is a time for caution, for prudence, and for upholding the legacy of our beloved Founder,” Eli concluded, his words echoing hollowly in the morning air. “My commitment to New Gilead’s true spiritual path remains unwavering.”

He finished, and a stunned silence enveloped the square. Then, slowly, uncertainly, a few hands began to clap. Others joined in, a hesitant patter that grew into a robust applause.

“Such humility!” one Elder exclaimed, beaming. “Overseer Eli has truly found his spiritual center!”

“A wise decision, indeed,” another agreed. “He listens to the spirit of the Founder.”

The congregation applauded his “humility,” completely unaware of the terror that had driven his “reflection.” They believed he had chosen a new path out of piety. They had no idea he was now merely a puppet, operating under his wife’s silent command, his public arrogance dissolving into permanent, hollow obedience. His victory was a shell, and I held the strings.
