A collective gasp swept through the banquet hall. The Elders, having just absorbed the news of my power of attorney, now saw the physical, irrefutable proof of my ownership. Their faces showed a mixture of awe and profound shock.

Eli stood frozen on the dais, his eyes fixed on the land trust certificate in my hand. His public assertion of authority had crumbled into dust. His power was an illusion.

“The Overseer… has no legal right to sell the timber?” Elder Amos finally managed to stammer, his voice thin with disbelief.

I met his gaze. “Not without my consent, Elder. And not without the unanimous consent of the Council, as per my father’s specific amendment to the trust for the Sacred Sentinel Woods.”

The Elders looked at Eli, then at each other. The implication was clear: Eli’s grand plans, his promise of prosperity through timber sales, were all null and void. He had no authority to enact them. He was a figurehead on a stage that was not his.

The congregants, initially confused, slowly began to understand the gravity of the announcement. Whispers spread like wildfire. Eli’s “promotion” suddenly seemed a hollow charade.

Eli, seeing his entire foundation crumbling in public, finally moved. He descended from the dais, his movements stiff and jerky. He walked toward me, his face a mask of barely contained fury.

“Hannah,” he hissed, his voice low and dangerous, “this is a mistake. A misunderstanding. This is not the way.”

I met his stare, refusing to flinch. “The way of truth, Eli, is often inconvenient.”

He grabbed my arm, his fingers digging into the wool of my cloak. “We will not air this laundry in public. This is a family matter. A spiritual matter.” His voice dropped even lower, an implied threat. “You will embarrass us all, and your father’s legacy, if you continue.”

I remained silent, simply raising an eyebrow. His desperation was palpable. He knew I had him cornered. The entire community was watching.

He looked around, seeing the curious, stunned faces of the congregants. He couldn’t risk a public scandal, not now, not when his carefully constructed image as the new, authoritative Overseer was still so fragile.

“A private audience,” he demanded, his grip tightening on my arm. “Now. In your father’s quarters. We will discuss this… calmly.”

He was still trying to exert control, still believing he could threaten or persuade me behind closed doors. He thought my quiet demeanor was a sign of weakness, a reluctance to cause public disruption. He still underestimated the weight of my silence.

I slowly pulled my arm free from his grip. “Very well, Eli,” I said, my voice quiet, but firm enough for those nearest to hear. “The Founder’s Study. It is indeed where such matters should be discussed.”

I turned and walked toward the private wing, leaving him standing in the center of the bewildered crowd. He had demanded a private confrontation, thinking it was his last chance to salvage his reputation. He had no idea it was a trap.
