Chapter 16: Two Weeks Later

The audiotape, played for Detective Moreau and the entire office, was the final, devastating nail in Marcus’s corporate coffin. His frantic attempts to blame Simone had backfired spectacularly, leaving him exposed and utterly isolated.

Less than an hour later, Board Chairman Carter Holloway convened an emergency executive session. The atmosphere in the mahogany-paneled boardroom was glacial. I was present, as was Evelyn St. Clair, observing quietly. Marcus, no longer the arrogant Vice President, sat slumped in a chair, guarded by an officer.

Chairman Holloway, his face etched with disappointment and a sense of institutional betrayal, did not mince words.

“Due to the egregious and undeniable evidence of corporate misconduct, wire fraud, and attempts to embezzle company funds, as detailed by Detective Moreau and corroborated by Ms. Washington’s testimony,” Holloway announced, his gaze sweeping over the silent board members, “this board has no choice but to take immediate and decisive action.”

He paused, letting the gravity of the moment settle. Marcus looked up, his eyes wide with a desperate plea. He knew what was coming.

“Effective immediately,” Holloway declared, his voice firm and unyielding, “Marcus Gaines is hereby terminated from his position as Vice President of DuBois Heritage Corporation. All his stock options are revoked, and his executive immunity, which he has so flagrantly abused, is officially rescinded.”

A collective sigh seemed to ripple through the room. It wasn’t a cheer, but a release of tension. Marcus’s reign of arrogance and greed was officially over. He had lost everything he had strived for, everything he had betrayed me for. His corporate career, his social standing, his entire professional identity, all crumbled to dust.

“Furthermore,” Holloway added, “due to the severity of the charges and the breach of fiduciary trust, the board will be pursuing full legal action against Mr. Gaines to reclaim any and all damages incurred by his fraudulent activities.”

Marcus’s face contorted in a silent scream. He tried to speak, but no words came out. His hands clenched into fists, then slowly relaxed, defeated. The power he had so desperately sought, the authority he believed was his by right, had been stripped away, leaving him utterly powerless.

An officer gently led him from the boardroom. As he walked past me, his eyes met mine. There was no anger, no sneer, just a hollow, empty stare. He was a shell of the man who had ordered me to serve champagne at his promotion gala.

Outside the DuBois Heritage Corp building, the ultimate insult awaited him. As he was being escorted to a waiting police vehicle, his personal luxury car, a sleek, expensive model he had always flaunted, was being towed away. The finance company, alerted to his immediate termination and financial ruin, had already repossessed it. Marcus Gaines, once the arrogant corporate climber, left the building in total disgrace, stripped of all authority, his vehicles and his future seized, a symbol of his complete and utter ruin.
