Chapter 11: The Manager’s Timeline

#content-1

The meeting with Ms. Albright was finally scheduled, a week after Liam’s accidental revelation and my frustrating conversation with Carlos. I walked into Elite Properties’ sleek, modern office with Carlos by my side, feeling a mix of apprehension and a renewed sense of purpose. The gleaming glass walls and polished chrome interior felt cold, unwelcoming.

Ms. Albright, a stern woman with impeccable posture and an unyielding gaze, greeted us with professional politeness. She gestured to a large conference table where a projector displayed a meticulously detailed timeline, already laid out for our viewing. My stomach clenched. This felt less like a discussion and more like an indictment.

“Thank you for coming in, Mr. and Ms. Rodriguez,” she began, her voice crisp and efficient. “I understand there have been some concerns regarding your application for the adjacent unit. I’ve prepared a comprehensive overview to clarify any misunderstandings.”

She clicked a remote, and the first slide appeared: “Rodriguez Panadería Application Timeline.” It was a damning visual, highlighting every supposed misstep. Each red flag on the timeline pointed directly at my family.

“As you can see,” Ms. Albright continued, her pointer sweeping across the screen, “your initial submission on June 5th was incomplete. We had to wait until June 20th for the revised business plan and financial statements.”

My eyes widened. June 20th? I remembered handing Chloe those documents on June 8th, a full week before. I had notes, dates, and even a text message confirming the handover.

“Then, on July 1st,” she clicked again, “we received a partially signed lease addendum, requiring further revisions and a fully executed copy by July 10th.”

Another lie. I had given Chloe the fully signed addendum on June 15th. This timeline painted a picture of our family as consistently late, disorganized, and unreliable. It was a carefully constructed narrative, designed to shift all blame onto us. It was a masterclass in petty cruelty, using meticulously arranged false data to make us look incompetent.

Carlos, sitting beside me, shifted uncomfortably in his seat. I could see the familiar look of defeat settling on his face. This was exactly the kind of official, bureaucratic presentation that overwhelmed him, making him doubt himself and our ability to navigate “their” system.

“Throughout this process,” Ms. Albright stated, her voice unwavering, “Ms. Chloe Davis has been an invaluable asset. She worked tirelessly to ‘corral’ your documents, often personally delivering submissions that were missing or incorrectly filled out.”

She turned, offering us a tight, almost condescending smile. “She truly went above and beyond, acting as an intermediary to help bridge any communication gaps and ensure your application moved forward, despite the numerous delays on your end.”

The words hit me like a physical blow. Chloe, a hero? Ms. Albright was painting her as a diligent, patient advocate, valiantly battling against our supposed disorganization. It was the ultimate gaslighting, not just from Chloe, but from an impartial third party. It made me question my own memory, my own sanity. Had I really given her those documents on time? Was I just misremembering?

“Chloe’s commitment to ensuring your family’s success is truly commendable,” Ms. Albright concluded, her gaze firm, leaving no room for argument. “She has dedicated a significant amount of her personal time to facilitate this process. Without her efforts, I’m not sure we would have been able to keep your application open for so long.”

Carlos nodded slowly, his eyes fixed on the timeline, accepting the narrative without question. His earlier doubts about Chloe seemed to vanish, replaced by a renewed sense of gratitude for her “help.” He even mumbled a quiet “thank you” to Ms. Albright, implicitly acknowledging our family’s fault.

My hands clenched under the table. This was Chloe’s narrative, expertly delivered by Ms. Albright. It explained why Elite Properties had been so cagey, why Sarah had insisted everything was “in order,” and why Liam had been so terrified. Someone had gone to great lengths to construct this false timeline, to backdate documents, to cover tracks.

The praise for Chloe, the subtle implication that we were a burden, an unorganized mess that she had to “corral,” was a calculated insult. It was designed to diminish our family, to make us feel grateful for Chloe’s “charity,” even as she sabotaged us. It was cruel, precise, and completely effective in swaying Carlos.

I looked at the timeline, my mind racing, trying to find a flaw, a contradiction, anything to break through this carefully crafted illusion. The “missing” documents, Liam’s slip, Chloe’s backpedaling – it all fit together now, orchestrated perfectly. The truth was being twisted, distorted, and presented as official fact. And there was nothing I could say, not yet, that would dismantle it. The meeting ended with Ms. Albright giving us a folder of “revised requirements,” a thinly veiled list of additional hoops to jump through, all because of our supposed incompetence. It was clear our lease was effectively dead, suffocated by bureaucracy and perceived delays. The cultural hub, and Abuela’s dream, seemed further away than ever.
