My Half-Brother Smashed My Late Mother's Picture at Our Elite Drama School — Until an Unknown Trust Provision Gave Me His Studio
The weight of my mother’s letter settled heavy in my lap as Marcus and I reviewed the financial statements she’d attached. They were meticulously kept, a testament to her foresight and the desperate hope she clung to.
“She knew Victoria would try to erase her,” Marcus said, his voice filled with a quiet admiration for Evelyn’s resilience. “So she prepared for it.”
He pointed to a specific line item in the financial records: “Evelyn Davenport Creative Works: Royalty Streams.”
“Victoria’s corporate holding company, Brooks Holdings Inc.,” Marcus explained, “is almost entirely reliant on these royalties. Licensing fees from Evelyn’s original copyrighted scripts, film treatments, character designs. The true creative backbone of Brooks Media.”
My mother’s letter confirmed it. She had detailed how Victoria had, for years, profited immensely from Evelyn’s intellectual property, all while keeping Julian and Evelyn in poverty.
“Without Julian’s signed consent to extend these licensing rights,” Marcus continued, his finger tracing a line on the financial statement, “Brooks Media has no legal claim to use those assets beyond midnight tonight.”
Midnight. A sudden, chilling deadline.
“Meaning?” I asked, though I already felt the answer forming.
“Meaning, without those royalty streams, Brooks Media is legally insolvent,” Marcus stated, his gaze meeting mine. “Completely. The company has no substantial assets of its own. It’s built on your mother’s creations, which they’ve been illegally using for a decade.”
The implications hit me with the force of a physical blow. Victoria’s entire empire, the one she had so ruthlessly built on my mother’s forced silence and my childhood illness, was now teetering on the edge of a precipice. Her corporate holding entity was nothing but an empty shell without my mother’s work.
And at midnight, without my signature, that shell would shatter.
The clock on Marcus’s wall seemed to tick louder, each second a countdown. Victoria and Brandon, blinded by their greed, had failed to understand that the very source of their wealth could also be their undoing. My mother, from beyond the grave, had laid the perfect trap.
