The studio archives were a labyrinth of dimly lit shelves, filled with canisters of film and stacks of production notes. The air was thick with the scent of old celluloid and dust. I was meticulously cataloging my mother’s recovered early reels when a shadow fell across the aisle.

Brandon. His eyes were wild, red-rimmed, his clothes disheveled. He clutched a silver lighter, its flame flickering, a tiny, menacing beacon in the gloom.

“Julian,” he rasped, his voice hoarse, “where is it? The trust document. Give it to me now.”

He gestured vaguely with the lighter towards a shelf filled with film canisters. “Or these go up in smoke. Every single one of your mother’s ‘lost performances.’ The earliest works, the ones you’ve been so desperate to recover.”

My hand instinctively tightened around the heavy canister I held. It contained the master reel of Evelyn’s first student film, a vibrant, experimental piece I’d only ever heard about.

“You wouldn’t,” I said, my voice steady, though my heart hammered against my ribs.

His laugh was a broken, desperate sound. “Wouldn’t I? My career is gone. My movie. Victoria’s company is collapsing. I have nothing left to lose, Julian. Nothing but this.” He flicked the lighter again, the tiny flame dancing.

The scent of chemicals and old plastic seemed to intensify, mixing with the imagined smell of burning film.

“Give me the document,” he repeated, taking a step closer, his eyes darting from me to the shelves. “Sign over your rights. Make this all go away.”

I looked at the flickering flame, then at his desperate, haunted face. He was beyond reason.

“Every minute you waste, Brandon,” I said, my voice cold, “brings the bank’s deadline closer. Midnight. The insolvency. All of it.”

His hand shook, but he didn’t lower the lighter. The tension in the dusty archive was thick, suffocating. He wanted to burn away the evidence, to erase my mother’s legacy one last time. But he didn’t realize the real power lay not in the physical reels, but in the words of her trust, and the ticking clock that was now his most dangerous enemy.
