The next morning, my phone buzzed with an alert. Not a text, but an urgent notification from my bank.

*Account Frozen: Fraudulent Activity Detected.*

A cold knot formed in my stomach. My rent was due in three days. The meager savings I’d meticulously built from my three campus jobs—all of it gone, locked away.

I tried calling the bank, but the automated voice just repeated the same message: a police report, citing identity theft, had been filed against me. A clear, desperate attempt to cripple me further.

Brandon. It had to be Brandon, or more likely, Victoria.

I didn’t panic. Panic was a luxury I couldn’t afford. Instead, I drove straight to Marcus Drake’s office. He was already expecting me, a fresh pot of herbal tea steaming on his desk.

“Another move from Victoria’s playbook, I presume?” he asked, pouring a cup for me.

I recounted the frozen account, the identity theft claim. He listened, stroking his chin, his expression unreadable.

“Predictable,” he finally said. “They believe if they cut off your ability to pay for essentials, you’ll fold. That you’ll sign whatever they put in front of you for a quick cash settlement.”

He pushed a stack of papers towards me. “But they underestimate the power of documentation, Julian. Your mother understood their greed, even back then.”

I looked at the top document. It was a copy of the equity trust, but with additional clauses highlighted.

“This is the early activation clause,” Marcus explained. “It allows us to contest any major financial transaction by Brooks Media, specifically if it’s for the direct benefit of a co-beneficiary — like Brandon’s acting career — while Evelyn’s heir is being financially obstructed.”

“What does that mean?” I asked, a flicker of understanding dawning.

“It means Brandon’s upcoming $12 million film project,” Marcus said, a faint smile touching his lips. “It’s about to hit a snag.”

He picked up the phone, dialing with a practiced ease. “Get me the corporate banking liaison for the Brooks Media production line,” he instructed into the receiver. “Tell them Marcus Drake is submitting an official Notice of Disputed Equity on behalf of the Evelyn Davenport Estate.”

I watched him, my hands still trembling slightly from the shock of my frozen account. But the knot in my stomach was loosening. They thought they were cutting off my lifeline. They didn’t realize I was about to cut off theirs.
